The last few decades of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first century saw a virtual revolution in how baseball went about the business of pitching and how it tried to understand the art of pitching. The emergence of analytics and sabermetrics made teams hire very specific data analysts whose sole job is to break down and analyze every part of the game including pitching very much included. To this basic set of measurements, more complex ones like FIP and WHIP were added, which painted a broader, more complex, picture of a pitcher’s performance and worth.

Training and Biomechanics
The art of pitching has evolved over the years to be complementary to training techniques and biomechanical knowledge. Modern-day hurlers are put through programs that go way beyond the task of building up the muscles of their arms. These broad programs center on total-body strength training – strengthening the muscles in the middle of the body as well as the lower body to support the upper body in creating optimal force in a biomechanically sound manner.
Biomechanics has become one of the most important prerequisites of current pitcher training. Modern technologies such as high-speed cameras and motion capture systems enable teams to study a pitcher’s delivery in slow motion and identify any flaws in the mechanics or signs of possible injury. Every pitcher is supported by some specialized coaches, the pitcher’s delivery is broken down and studied and the mechanics of throwing are fine-tuned in search of the perfect motion that will provide heat and movement to the baseball and not tax the all-important throwing arm.
The pitching revolution has seen hurlers change from being muscle-bound men of today who depended on force into athletes who understand the physics of the game. Statistics and research have brought about a new age of pitch differentiation and longevity of pitchers on the playing field.
