I appreciate the perspective that investment and redevelopment will play an important role in Fort Myers Beach’s recovery. Few would disagree that rebuilding after Hurricane Ian requires significant private investment, strong businesses, resilient infrastructure, and a healthy local economy.

Where many residents differ is in the belief that preserving community character somehow stands in the way of recovery.

Fort Myers Beach is not simply a collection of properties. It is a community with a unique identity, history, and sense of place. Those qualities are not obstacles to our future. They are part of what makes people choose to live here, visit here, and invest here.

The discussion about Fort Myers Beach’s future is often framed as a choice between embracing change or resisting progress. I believe the conversation is more nuanced than that. Communities can grow, evolve, and recover while still remaining true to the qualities that define them.

Residents who express a desire to preserve the character of Fort Myers Beach should not be viewed as anti-growth or anti-investment. Likewise, those who advocate for investment and redevelopment are often motivated by a sincere desire to see the island thrive. Both perspectives come from people who care deeply about the future of our community.

The challenge facing Fort Myers Beach is not whether we support recovery. We do. The challenge is how to achieve recovery in a way that reflects the values and vision of the people who call this island home.

Reasonable people can disagree about what that future should look like. But residents should never be criticized for wanting Fort Myers Beach to remain recognizably Fort Myers Beach.

Recovery and community character are not mutually exclusive goals. I believe our community can successfully achieve both.
