Preschool Story Hour meets in the children’s multi-purpose area on the first floor in Kid’s Place
Trooper, the blind racoon, visits on Jan. 30 and highlighted are aspects relating to wildlife.
Neil Volz, author and former lobbyist, looks at why our government operates the way it does. Having firsthand knowledge and experience of how much lobbying affects the political system, he looks at how corruption occurs and discusses what this may be attributable to.
Gardeners and enthusiasts are invited to participate in the Garden Club meeting on Feb. 4 to get a first-hand look at the Club’s activities and plans. New members are welcome.
Sheila O’Neill shares a variety of Irish tales, most of which are sure to add to one’s day. The dose of commonsense makes the time worth coming for as in the Irish quote, “Who gossips with you will gossip of you.”
Bill Shaver brings his discovery and archaeological skills to the presentation on Feb. 5 that looks at specimens, which make up the fabulous fossils of Florida.
Tide Clock
The hand on the dial indicates the position that, in a specific time, corresponds to ‘high tide.’
The upper half of the dial indicates high tide while the bottom half shows the low tide. The left side of the dial shows how many hours to high tide, while the right side indicates how many hours to low tide.
The tide is a periodic motion of large masses of water that rise (high tide) and fall (low tide) due to the gravitational attraction felt by the moon-sun system on the earth and the centrifugal force due to the rotation of the earth.

Stairs
In addition to the elevator, one can take stairs from the tower lobby to the first and second floors. There are no stairs to the third floor. The top floor features the Friend’s bookstore, Community Room and Cafe’ and may be open later than the classic library on the first two floors. This enables the third floor to be accessible and the library proper closed off.
Handling DVDs
When checking out DVDs and using them in a player at home, please handle the disc only at the edges. Dirt on the discs requires extra time for cleaning. Scratches can reduce the quality of the viewing for others, and ultimately means money is spent for replacing what was handled with less than care instead of adding more titles. Almost always, users welcome having more titles.
Returning Materials?
If you bring back titles as you enter the library, stop at the Materials Return in the Lobby, putting titles in one at a time. At that point they are checked in. If you want a receipt of what you’ve returned, press the blinking receipt button while titles are being put in the slot. There are direction signs on the return and if following these, the return usually goes without a hitch.
If you’re returning items after hours, drive in from Bay Road and the Materials Return is available from your vehicle. It is the same procedure as the Lobby Materials Return.
Community Room
Events in this Room are summarized on a monthly listing available at the staff workstations on both the first and second floors. More details for individual events can be found on the bulletin board on the third floor.
Library Development Fund
Gifts to the Library are welcome. Donations to the Library Development Fund are used to purchase resources that our operating budget doesn’t cover. Of particular interest are items for the Children’s Courtyard, for Kid’s Place, for The Classics Collection, and for Audio Avenue expansion. A donor will match dollar per dollar any contribution for The Classics Collection, so if you’re able and interested in that option, your gift will be immediately doubled. Just mark it ‘classics.’
Library Hours
When we are closed, the hours of operation are included in a recording when you call in. Stop by on Monday and Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.; on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., and on Saturday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. We look forward to seeing you.
