Upcoming Activity
This week’s session “Adventure in Art” is a time to come and enjoy and have fun with a variety of art materials. No previous art experience or skill necessary. Music, watercolor, markers and learning some design techniques will be incorporated in a relaxed atmosphere. Pre-register and $2 materials fee.
Book Discussion will be looking at “Secret Daughter” by Shilpi Somaya Gowda. This story centers around family relationships and the way our choices impact others’ lives. For those who are new to book discussion, this may be an ideal time of year to try out as the group is smaller and participating easier.
Displays
In the display at the top of the stairs this month it’s “Christmas hints in October.” The display includes place settings and related items used during the holidays, all conveying the festive time associated with Christmas. The collection is courtesy of Bobbi Kemp.
Construction
Walls for the parking area under the expansion are in the process of being poured. It takes time for the forms, which can be seen from Estero, to be put in place and the strengthening process but it’s moving ahead. One of the walls is completed and the forms for the other two are underway.
Thank you for remembering to include the Library Construction Fund in your giving options.
Browsing
According to the “2010-2011 U.S. Book Consumer Demographics & Buying Behaviors Annual Review,” browsing helps many buyers choose a title. We find this very true in the library. Being able to see a work and often noticing adjoining ones is an activity that many find very helpful.
It was a concern to librarians when Amazon submitted a patent (which was granted to them last year) that enables them to do variable pricing for electronically viewing content online. To date, it has gotten little attention. While it is not as pleasurable to do the online searching compared to the physical browsing, both options are welcome. While there is pressure to charge for more of what is available on the Internet, libraries are preparing for both worlds-the value of physical browsing of titles as well as electronic searching as options become easier and more helpful.
Those who are regular users of the library know that we have been to capacity for years in terms of adding titles to the existing space. We are eagerly looking forward to the expansion when we have the space to give titles a bit of breathing area as well as giving readers and browsers more opportunities to make those important discoveries of titles they would not ever find out about otherwise.
Library Hours
When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9-1. We look forward to seeing you.
