A large sinkhole at the intersection of Bay Beach Lane and Estero Boulevard on Fort Myers Beach has been coned off after a broken underground water pipe caused erosion beneath the road, Town of Fort Myers Beach officials said in a statement. Repairs are expected to begin on Monday. Bay Beach Lane is home to a group of condominium buildings where a significant percentage of the town’s population resides.

According to Town of Fort Myers Beach officials, the broken underground pipe was discovered during work to address a water service line break at Lake Valencia Condominiums. There are currently no active water leaks or service interruptions, the town’s statement said.

“The surrounding ground appears stable, and repairs are scheduled to begin Monday, October 26, pending further assessment,” town officials said in a statement.
