Crescent Beach Family Park project completed
The makeover of Crescent Beach Family Park was completed this past week as contractors for Lee County installed new benches throughout the Fort Myers Beach park.
Lee County owns the property where the park is located between Times Square and Margaritaville Beach Resort.
Vantage Construction Services was hired on a $1.3 million contact to overhaul the lot from being a lot of sand with a row of cabbage palm trees which was once a destination for beach volleyball and games of soccer and catch, to the current state of walkway paths with shade structures.
The work included the relocation of one restroom trailer, the installation of one new restroom trailer, bike racks, and six picnic tables.
The park now has a mix of walkable paths between sand and grassy areas overlooking the beach.
The project elicited controversy when a group of cabbage palm trees which lined the front of the park were removed and destroyed improperly.
According to the county, the plans include the plantings of 28 shade trees (three green buttonwoods, 12 gumbo limbos and 13 sea grapes). Prior to Hurricane Ian, this park didn’t contain any shade trees. The plans also include 1,400 shrubs and groundcover plants. Some of the cabbage palms on the property were saved, and the county pledged to replace some that were removed.
