Mound House to host presentation from meteorologist
Katie Walls a meteorologist with WINK News, will be giving a presentation on weather forecasting at the Mound House on Thursday.
The program will begin with refreshments at 5 p.m., followed by the lecture at 5:30 p.m.
Walls will cover how meteorologists use information gathered from satellites, Doppler radar, weather stations, and other advanced technologies to create weather forecasts. Walls will explain how computer modeling works, the latest innovations in weather forecasting, and how emerging technologies are improving forecast accuracy.
Walls will discuss how WINK News and news organizations work with the National Weather Service, research institutions, government agencies, and universities that provide the data and scientific expertise needed to produce reliable weather forecasts.
The presentation will also explore what causes weather patterns to change, the vital role oceans play in influencing local and global weather, and how climate change is affecting storm frequency and intensity. Katie will discuss the broader impacts of these changes on coastal communities, ecosystems, and biodiversity, helping attendees better understand the environmental challenges facing Southwest Florida and beyond.
Walls has nearly 20 years of experience forecasting Florida’s weather. She first joined WINK News in 2011 and returned to Southwest Florida in 2022 after working in major Southeast markets, including Atlanta and Charlotte. Over the years, she has covered some of the most significant storms to impact the region, including Hurricanes Ian, Irma, Michael, Helene, and Milton. Katie holds a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from Florida State University and a Master’s degree in Meteorology from Penn State University. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist and also holds certification in Emergency Management.
