Photos from the Town of Fort Myers Beach sand haul and berm project, which is creating a six-foot high berm along the beach from near the Sterling Avenue public beach access down to near Miramar Street. The work started in May, with more than 40,000 cubic yards of sand expected to be deposited along the beach
The work is being done in the middle of shorebird nesting season and sea turtle nesting season and has included heavy machinery and truck activity near a threatened snowy plover nest, and has required the relocation of 13 sea turtle nets. There are sea turtle and shorebird monitors following the project though there have been complaints that the roped-off areas for the nesting shorebirds was not large enough to protect them from surrounding activity by not just the machinery but as well as beachgoers during Memorial Day weekend. There has been concern that nesting snowy plovers and their hatchlings were already disturbed by the nearby activity.
Town officials have not addressed why the sand renourishment work wasn’t done before the nesting seasons or why it wasn’t put on hold until after the season. Questions to Town of Fort Myers Beach Manager Will McKannay did not address the timing and why the work wasn’t done outside of the nesting seasons.
Fort Myers Beach Mayor Dan Allers referred questions to Town Environmental Project Manager Chadd Chustz, who did not address the question. Instead, Chustz referred to the town’s website regarding the sand haul project.
Fort Myers Beach Public Information Officer Abigail Eberhart said the Dakota Avenue and Sterling Avenue beach accesses, where the project started, will be the staging areas for the equipment and sand. They are expected to remain closed through the remainder of the project, which is expected to finish in July.
Eberhart said the project will “restore dune elevation and fill in low-lying areas on the beach from Miramar to Aberdeen beach accesses.”
The current work is an extension of the town’s sand renourishment project last year, which went past the expected completion dates and deep into shorebird nesting and sea turtle nesting season.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) have not acted to stop the work. The FWC is monitoring the activity and the town is required to have nesting monitors to ensure nesting shorebirds and their hatchlings aren’t impacted though those protections are not full-proof.
Bradley Cornell, Southwest Florida Policy Associate with Audubon Florida, said “it’s not an ideal time for beach projects, because of shorebird nesting season, but with FWC monitoring and professional bird monitors, there should not be impacts to nesting birds.”
The town has been conducting sand haul and beach renourishment projects for the last three years that have all interfered with shorebird nesting season. Last year, Turtle Time also had to relocate sea turtle nests due to the town’s sand renourishment activities.
The current work is expected to be completed in July with an estimated cost of $2 million.
