The Town of Fort Myers Beach announced an art walk and return of cupcakes at a ceremony to be held Thursday, March 6 to celebrate the town’s 30th anniversary.

The event will begin at 2 p.m. at Bayside Veterans Park with a “walk of history” and “art walk” which will feature artwork from the Fort Myers Beach Art Association, along with historical photographs and displays provided by the Estero Island Historic Society.

In an announcement of the ceremony released by the town Tuesday, the town announced that “attendees are invited to explore the town’s rich past while enjoying local art that reflects the spirit of Fort Myers Beach.”

A ceremony and awards presentation will take place at 3 p.m. at Times Square. The town announced that community leaders, local, state and federal representatives will be expected to attend to provide remarks recognizing the town’s incorporation and recovery from Hurricane Ian.

Cupcakes will be handed out at the end of the ceremony, continuing a longstanding tradition the town long had on New Year’s Eve where cupcakes were handed out to the public. The celebration will be two months later than the town’s normal day of honoring the anniversary of its incorporation, which historically was held on New Year’s Eve, before Hurricane Ian.

Fort Myers Beach residents voted to incorporate in November of 1995, with the incorporation taking effect on Jan. 1, 1996. The incorporation gave Fort Myers Beach residents control over local zoning matters and planning decisions, taking that power away from Lee County Government.
