Fort Myers Beach Manager issues statement on Sept. 23 deadline for trailers to be removed
Town of Fort Myers Beach Manager Will McKannay has issued a statement on the pending deadline for residents and businesses to remove temporary trailers. As the Fort Myers Beach Observer reported last week, the town is pushing forward with a Sept. 23 deadline for temporary trailers to be removed as the town seeks to reclaim its status in the National Flood Insurance Program.
The following statement was issued by McKannay today:
“As of September 23, 2025, the current provision allowing permits for trailers and RVs will expire. This is part of the Town’s effort to comply with FEMA regulations and restore its standing in the National Flood Insurance Program.
“Finding a compliant path forward is deeply important to me-not just as a matter of policy, but as a personal mission to support our residents and businesses in their recovery. I am working closely with our elected leaders, my staff, and FEMA representatives to identify a solution that protects this vital resource while ensuring full alignment with floodplain management standards.
“Our community has come too far, and although I cannot yet promise success in this effort, I will pursue this goal relentlessly until we have exhausted all efforts.”
The announcement follows meetings with FEMA and town officials last week as part of a site visit for the town to get off FEMA probation and to get back into the National Flood Insurance Program.
FEMA officials declined to comment on the site visit when the Fort Myers Beach Observer contacted their communications office this week.
There has been some confusion among some businessowners as to whether they can still operate their businesses out of trailers if the trailers can be hauled off attached to light trucks in the event of another hurricane. Fort Myers Beach Communications Director Nicole Berzin said the town was checking with FEMA on that.
