During a management and planning session today, the Town of Fort Myers Beach Council backed off the proposal by Councilmember John King to annex San Carlos Island. Mayor Dan Allers said he wouldn’t support the effort, saying he wanted to keep the “status quo” and that any annexation idea should be brought to the town by the residents, not the other way around. “I think that should be initiated by their residents,” Allers said. “Personally, I don’t want to be the one to initiate that study.” King said the annexation would add population to the town and give the town more control over the way the entrance to the town looks. King, who proposed the annexation in April, said he didn’t want to commit the town to spending funds on a feasibility study, which would be required for the annexation.
