Anchor disappears from Ostego Bay Marine Science Center
For 25 years, the Ostego Bay Marine Science Center has had two anchors dating back to at least the early 19th century, in front of its building on Fishermans Wharf on San Carlos Island.
On Jan. 19, the center’s president Joanne Semmer said she noticed one of them was gone. According to Semmer, the anchor is believed to be at least 170 years old. The anchors were donated to the center by a treasure hunter. Semmer said a police report was filed but as of Jan. 17, no one had been caught for the theft.
Semmer said there were originally three anchors. The center donated the third to the Estero Island Historical Society. She plans to take the remaining anchor inside.
“Whoever took it had to have a couple guys with a pickup truck,” Semmer said, noting the weight of the anchor. Semmer said the contractors next door checked their security cameras which capture part of the road, to see if they could find anything but were unable to.
