“Pink Weekend 2009” educates breast cancer awareness
Susan G. Komen for the Cure Southwest Florida announces the third annual Pink Weekend event on Saturday, Oct. 24 and Sunday, Oct. 25, in celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“Pink Weekend 2009” will involve nearly 600 churches and synagogues in Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee Counties to join in the fight against breast cancer. “Pink Weekend” is a grassroots outreach effort with local churches and synagogues to educate the members of their respective congregations on breast health and breast cancer. This effort is presented to help address the occurrence of breast cancer locally and is the third year the program has been held in this area.
The Southwest Florida Komen Affiliate will provide breast health information packets to each participating church and synagogue at no cost to be distributed to attendees. Each individual church or synagogue is responsible for coordinating the event at their weekend services. Church and synagogue leaders are asked to designate a “”Pink Ambassador” (perhaps a survivor) to assist in co-coordinating activities for the day. Churches and synagogues have the opportunity to celebrate survivors that day in their congregations as well as honor those who have lost their battle. Participants are encouraged to wear pink on Pink Saturday or Sunday to commemorate the day.
Churches and synagogues in Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry and Lee Counties are encouraged to participate in spreading the life-saving message of early detection.
