Healthy lifestyle programs at Newton Park

3 min read

The Town of Fort Myers Beach is offering a variety of healthy lifestyle activities at Newton Park at 4650 Estero Blvd. The activities began Tuesday, April 5.

Here is a listing of the activities:

– Open Bocce: There’s a reason bocce has been around for 7,000 years. The ancient Egyptians knew a good thing when they had it. Bocce is an exciting and unique way to spend quality time with friends, and meet new people, while getting pumped with light hearted, competitive energy. Bocce involves rolling a ball down a court, a physical action that anyone can enjoy, and the courts at Newton Park are handicapped accessible and afford a beautiful view of the Gulf of Mexico. Bocce will get you off the couch and into the fresh air, perfect your hand eye coordination, and make you think as you roll your way to triumph!

Come join in on Tuesdays at 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Equipment provided. No experience necessary. Free.

– Beginners’ Yoga: Yoga is a wonderful activity that simply makes you feel better. Practicing the postures, breathing exercises and meditation is healthy for the body, mind and spirit. Yoga lets you tune in, chill out, shape up — all at the same time, while enjoying a panoramic gulf view from inside the historic Seven Seas home. .

Beginners’ Yoga is offered Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m. for the next two weeks. It began on April 5, and will continue April 12 and April 19. Class size is limited. Bring a yoga mat and straps if you have them. The cost is $10 per class.

– Treasures of the Sea Guided Beach Walk

Aside from the beautiful view of the ocean and the great bird watching there are many benefits of walking on the beach. Walking at a slow pace requires more effort than walking fast or even jogging, and even strolling on the beach will burn 20 to 50 percent more calories than walking at the same pace on a hard surface. Plus, joining a guided beach walk with an experienced biologist exploring the natural treasures that wash ashore on Estero Island beaches, and even picking up a pretty shell will relax and re-energize you as nothing else can.

The event is Wednesdays at 9 a.m. for approximately 1½ hour. Free.

Beach walkers should wear sunscreen, appropriate clothing, shoes, and hats, and bring water and a container for any sea treasures found.

Newton Park is a beach front property and historic home rich in island history associated with Jim and Ellie Newton, whose extensive friendships with Thomas Edison, Henry Fort, Harvey Firestone, Charles Lindbergh, and others are recorded in Jim Newton’s book Uncommon Friends. The park offers picnic tables, bocce courts, a chickee hut and public restrooms.
