Join us on Thursday, January 22nd at the Mound House for “Community Conversations” with Rachel Sanderson- Executive Director of Sin Barcos, Inc., creator of La Florida: The Interactive Digital Archives of the Americas.

Refreshment and cheese will be available during the lecture, which will be free for members and $5 for the public.

This presentation introduces Lost Voices from America’s Oldest Parish Archive, 1594-1821. Housed at laflorida.org-a free, open-access platform dedicated to bridging the gap between rigorous academic research and the public- this project brings some of the oldest original documents in the United States directly to your screen. These records provide unparalleled insight into the daily lives of colonial Florida’s multi-ethnic inhabitants, and the relationships among its African, European, and Indigenous residents, placing Florida’s colonial history within a global and national context.

Looking ahead, we will go behind the scenes to preview the organization’s upcoming initiatives: the integration of new data from our Irish diaspora research and the ambitious Sixteenth-Century Gulf exhibit slated for 2028. We will explore how this expansion significantly broadens our geographical lens to include the southern Gulf Coast. Discover how these new digital tools are redefining our understanding of early Florida’s shared heritage.
