Visit with author Tim Dorsey
Participate in the presentation by visiting Florida author Tim Dorsey on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 1 p.m. in the Community Room. His visit prompts us to designate the day as Tim Dorsey Day with live music and food in the Library Commons on the third floor, starting at 10:30 a.m.
Dorsey moved to Florida at the age of 1 and spent 4 years working at the newspaper in Montgomery and later, at the Tampa paper. He then spent time at the Talahassee bureau and started writing full time in late 1999. Since then, he has published 14 novels in several languages.
He will share some ideas on his writing and novels, as well as devote time to Q & A. Plan to make time in your schedule for this special event.
Help Needed
Will you consider helping out for the booksale in the parking garage on Saturday, Nov. 7? If you can help setup a few hours on Friday, Nov 6, please let me know. We also need assistance in packing up after the sale on Saturday, Nov. 7. Hours on Nov. 6 are 10:30 a.m. to ? (if you can come just two hours, that’s OK and most welcome), and on Nov. 7 are 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. – the more hands there are the quicker all is done. You will mainly be organizing titles on Friday, and then packing up unsold titles on Saturday.
Materials Return
When books are oversize it’s easier for them to get caught on the roller track and sometimes not be available for the next person or not be checked in when the widest end of the book is laid in first. If the narrow side is laid on the sorter belt, it almost always registers correctly and works perfectly. This is a practice we encourage for all materials, whether print or audiovisual.
Volunteer
We need a volunteer to oversee a 4 hour shift in the bookstore of The Friends. Give me a call if you can assist or what day you might be available or send an email to beachfriends@comcast.net and the chair will respond and discuss further with you.
Drawing
Basic drawing resumes this month. Watch the schedule as a drawing class is scheduled for most Mondays starting with Nov 2. Bring hard dark pencil, eraser and paper. Guidance and tips will be available as desired.
Book Sale
Giant book sale is available Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. There will be lots of tables of titles to sift through with treasures to be enjoyed.
November Schedule
There are a lot of events scheduled in the Community Room for November. Pick up a schedule at the first or second floor Staff Assistance Station or look at our online calendar to check out some of the events.
Our Planet – Deeply Forgiving but also Mortal
At the time of Florida’s first census in 1830, the state population stood at 37,730 people. In 1950, a decade before air conditioning and mosquito control, the population was only 2.81 million. Today, there are almost 20 million of us. The sheer numbers are not the concern for the natural system could support those numbers because creation is so resilient and so forgiving.
Southern Florida may not be a Garden of Eden because there is no such place on the planet, no matter what some marketers say. But it is a garden of natural bounty that is both fertile and fragile.
We continue to add Florida related titles to the collection. The latest include Florida Fruit & Vegetable Gardening (FL 635.097 BOW) and Field Guide to the Birds of Florida (FL 598.072 PRA).
Lack of caring hurts Florida as well as the planet. We notice this too in the library when people use the many ways conservation is encouraged, e.g. eating only the third floor to avoid pests in the library proper, or using the cellphone there too to avoid disturbing others who are reading, researching or concentrating on a specific project.
Library Hours
When we are closed, the hours of operation are included in a recording when you call in. Stop by Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.; on Wednesday between 9 and 7; and on Saturday between 9 and 1. We look forward to seeing you.
