We added 50 new books to the shelves this past week and 1 audiobook and 4 DVDs and 36 magazines. There is always something to browse.
Special
Florida author Tim Dorsey will be visiting the library on Saturday, Oct. 31. Festivities that day include live music by Keith Atkins and food in the Library Commons from 10:30 a.m. to Noon that day. Author Dorsey will speak in the Community Room at 1 p.m. that day sharing tips and ideas and also open to questions or comments from the audience.
More Activities in Nov/Sign-Up
More activities and presentations are scheduled for the Community Room in November. See schedule at Staff Assistance Station on first or second floor, or online calendar. It’s important to sign up for sessions or presentations you might be interested in. By signing up early, you often enable the presenter to have handouts ready for the number in the class or give us a chance to make changes if turnout is very low or set up for a class that is attracting more people than anticipated. Thanks for planning ahead.
If there is no material fee, you can sign up for a class or presentation via phone by calling 765-8162 and asking for the sign up class desk.
Movies
When movies are scheduled, it is necessary to pre-register one day in advance of the showing. If you want to see us expand this option, invite friends to participate and become a regular yourself. The minimum of one day in advance sign-up is necessary to enable us to make more efficient use of the licensing necessary for each showing.
Book Sale
The next giant book sale is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7.
Can you help The Friends set up for this event on Friday, Nov. 6, starting at 10:30 a.m. for a few hours? Help is definitely needed. You’d be assisting in organizing titles by subject and in seeing that materials are out for the sale. If you can help, please call and leave your name and phone # with me or send an e-mail to beachfriends@comcast.net and indicate your availability.
There is also help needed for packing up remaining items after the sale on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. If you can help, either call or send an email.
If you have a spouse or teen or older child who can help too, that is most welcome.
Book Discussion
Each month the group meets the third Tuesday of the month to discuss a work highly recommended by a variety of individuals or other clubs. The October book is “The Life We Bury” by Allen Eskens, and the November selection is “The Call” by Yannick Murphy. You can usually get a copy two weeks or more in advance by purchasing one at the first floor Staff Assistance Station for $6. The minimal cost is to make it easy and quick to participate in the book discussion which takes place the third Tuesday of each month at 10:30 a.m. See you there!
Windows 10
The latest operation system, Windows 10, from Microsoft was released on July 29th and is offered as a free upgrade to all Windows 8 and Windows 7 users. Windows 10 features many enhancements, including updated default apps, a new web browser and Cortana, Microsoft’s personal assistant.
A Windows 10 class is scheduled for November 18. Pre-register. The class will demonstrate how these features work. The class will be scheduled again in December and January.
Quilting
I stopped at the Quilting Group this week and found active conversation, and some appealing examples of projects underway. The Quilting Group meets again on Oct. 28, and in November on the 18th and 25th. It meets two consecutive Wednesday in November because the library is closed for Veterans Day on Nov 11.
Giving
Thank you for your continued gifts to the library, whether it’s bringing in books or DVDs or leaving a donation in the gift boxes in the foyer or second floor.
We are in the process of working with artists regarding a third bronze statue for the exterior of the building. If you can invest and enable this statue to be commissioned, please see me for details. I encourage a gift of $500 or more for this statue.
Materials on Each Floor
Please check out any materials located on the first or second floor before you leave the floor. You can certainly read on any floor but check-out materials on the floor you find it before using the stairs or elevator. Thanks.
Hours
When we are closed a recorder gives the hours we are open. When open, we answer the phone in person. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday 9 to 7; and Saturday 9 to 1. All gates close when the library closes. We look forward to seeing you.
