Preschool Story Hour on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 10:30 a.m.
We are closed Monday, Sept. 7 in observance of Labor Day.
Upcoming Movie
Watch for upcoming movie selections. The next one is Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 1:30 p.m. featuring a new, award-winning independent film, “Teddy Bear.” It deals with a 38 year old bodybuilder seeking love and goes for 96 minutes in Danish, Thai, English with English subtitles. Pre-register a minimum of one day before showing.
Traffic
We are aware that some residents are not coming to the library as often as they would during the summer due to the traffic. This need not deter one from having enough to read. Explore the catalog online and make your selections by putting items on hold. We’ll let you know when they are ready.
You can also come later in the evening to pick up materials by asking a staff member to put them in an outside locker by the exterior materials return. Then you can come by 24/7 and retrieve the materials as they will be checked out to your account. You’ll get info on opening the locker. Many find this a perfect solution. Bottom line: traffic need not keep you from having reading enjoyment and material to read.
Book Discussion Group
The next book discussion is on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr will be the focus.
What to Read
Consider visiting the library homepage and click on “What Should I Read Next?” under “Resources.” Then choose Literature and on the webpage click on “Literature Map.” There one gets a matrix of author names who share characteristics with the original author one provides.
Teen Titles
Fifty-five percent of TEEN books are bought by adults who prefer reading that genre. So many adults do not have enough time to read as much as they would like. They find Teen books are easy and quick reads with fast developing plots. They are easier to fit into busy schedules.
Making Room
You may notice that staff have been busy in the last two weeks with emphasis on the Mystery, Fiction and Teen collections. Titles that have not been checked out are finding a new home, and the available room welcomes new titles, and some treasured ones displayed in a more prominent manner.
Display
The second floor has one display cabinet devoted to seashell creations. Each item that is part of this exhibit has been handcrafted. The diversity and variety of how shells are creatively used will hopefully offer you some ideas, in addition to appreciating the creativity that local artists bring to this activity. Each creation is from the hand of a different person. Let yourself enjoy the different approaches and gain overall appreciation for giving new life to seashells.
A poem entitled The Seashell and The Child, written by John Rhinem offers some thoughts that fit well with the creations on display.
As the tides slowly recede
Remnants left upon the shore
Reflecting beneath the sunlight
That bathes them now, from beyond the once obscure depths
Shimmering and glistening, souvenirs to soon be found and held
By the eager eyes of a child’s tender hands
Whom shall rescue them, from their once solitude
No longer their existence without a purpose

Book Sale
A few inquiries in the past few weeks have asked when the next book sale is anticipated. While an exact date has not been set yet, I anticipate it will be in October. So many titles have changed hands in Beachcombers Bookstore that it’s possible to find a treasure there. The bookstore is open Monday to Friday, 10:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
Inquiring Minds
One of the pleasures of working in a public library is that staff get to meet so many interesting individuals. Two writers were in this week and contacted a staff member to decipher the difference between a preface and a prologue. You likely have seen use of both of these terms.
This is the answer worked out: A prologue brings you into the book. It’s an introduction to the story wherein lies the twist to keep the reader’s interest. A preface is an introduction but centered on why the author is writing this book or what the reader needs to know before getting started reading.
