Event Details
The Android class on July 20 concentrates on the basic features for using Android devices. Includes searching for and downloading apps and widgets and offers other helpful tips. Pre-register.
The Book Discussion on July 21 centers on Whiskey & Charlie by Annabel Smith. This is a good time of year to participate in the discussion.
Bookstore Volunteer
Volunteering in the store is a good opportunity to get to know titles and authors better and chat with browsers who come to discover treasures. We are looking for someone who would be free one day a week from 10:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Please fill out an application for bookstore volunteer and someone will call you to arrange training and details.
Interesting
Though our nation is extensive in land and diverse in population, the prevailing taste of the reading public from coast to coast seems to be somewhat similar. The popular title on the East Coast is often the big book in the West Coast and also in the Midwest. But last month, we seemed to be all over the map.
In the Northeast, The Wright Brothers by David McCullough (629.13 MCC) occupied the charts while Radiant Angel by Nelson DeMille (On Order) was popular in the Middle and South Atlantic. In the East North Center and South Central, Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss (JE SU) was the favorite, while Paper Towns by John Green (TEEN M GRE) occupied attention in the West North Central. The Mountain area of USA focused on Top Secret Twenty-One by Janet Evanovich (M EVA) while the Pacific concentrated on The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo (648 KON).
Graphic Novels
Print graphic novels rose over 18 percent over the first quarter of 2014, and 2014 was a robust year. If you’re looking for selections of graphic novels at the Beach Library, just type in graphic novels into the catalog search.
Landscaping
If you enjoy spending time in the yard, tickering in nature, enjoying and lingering in nature, consider volunteering to assist in taking care of library landscaping. There are many little projects needing attention. Because we do not use harsh chemicals to kill nor use loud machines to rid the landscape quickly of plants and weeds, it does a bit longer to do some tasks. However, we believe the more friendly approach yields benefits both the environment and the soul. Fill out a volunteer application at the first floor Staff Assistance Station, asking for a landscape volunteer application. I’ll get in touch with you to discuss possibilities. There are both short-term and long-term opportunities.
Exhibits
Do have a special collection that you have devoted many years to gathering and preserving? If it’s one you’d welcome sharing with others, we are open to considering it for one of the display and exhibit areas in the library. Share ideas and we’ll work out something.
Book Care
Books are a fairly sturdy invention. They are designed to last when handled with care. Following these tips lengthens the life of library books as well as those you are keeping in your home and special collection.
1. Place similar sized books next to each other on shelves and don’t force a book into a book shelve. The extra room will prevent wrapping or damage when removing books.
2. Avoid leaving acidic papers, such as newsprint, in books. It will darken the pages.
3. Keep books in a cool, clean and non-humid environment. Excessive heat and humidity can cause growth of mold and attract insects.
4. Avoid sunlight that can dull colors and fade dust jackets.
5. Instead of laying books face down to keep your place, use bookmarks.
6. Avoid eating or drinking near your books.
Gems of Wisdom
This display in one of the lighted cabinets on the second floor offers a variety of love turtle, with each depicting an aspect of love. Each love turtle has a quote with it that serves as a “gem of wisdom” to enable us to reflect on the Why of life to figure out better how to live. We thank George & Irene Warrens for sharing their collection of love turtles and gems of wisdom.
