Spending time with us on Wednesday, June 10, 10:30 a.m. will be author James Dworkin who will read and share his The Dog and Dolphin. This will be followed by a craft activity.
Artist of the Month
You may have gotten to know June’s Artist of the Month, Jack Kenner, from some of his photography books. In the collection see Dogs I’ve Nosed, Dogs I’ve Nosed II, and just being added Dogs I’ve Nosed from Here to Naples (Science, Pets, Dogs, Kenner). Kenner grew up in a family where there was a doghouse in the backyard and dogs didn’t come into the house. He was surprised that many people pamper their dogs at home and away from home. While his first two books feature dogs from around the country, his latest explores the ways in which dogs have become ingrained into our homes.
It will be easy to recognize Jack Kenner as a nature photographer. He has shot everything from frogs to rhinos and throughout the USA and Africa. Kenner, a native of Memphis, began his interest in photography when he photographed the football team for a Fancy Foot contest at his high school. His retired uncle sold him the cameras and equipment he needed for the project and that motivation and $30 profit started Kenner’s career as a professional photographer. His passion continues as he just returned from South Africa and will be sharing that expedition in a January presentation.
Mystery Readers
If you’ve done any browsing in recent weeks in the Mystery collection, you have probably noticed some moving of titles. We are currently reviewing the entire selection and making room for new titles. This also involves removing some works and authors that have received little interest from readers recently.
Cafe’
The Cafe’ is closed in June as part of the cafe’ manager’s summer hiatus. We will miss the sandwiches, lathes and treats and wish Tara a stimulating vacation.

Bookstore
Summer hours are underway in Beachcomber’s Books for this month as the store is open Monday to Friday 10:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. We are adding a larger number of mystery and fiction titles than usual, and also expanding the Children’s section.
Best of 2014
Summer is an ideal opportunity to enjoy more time in reading. Among titles to consider are ones which received recognition as “the best books of 2014.”
Included are non-fiction works such as No Place to Hide by Glenn Greenwald (Politics, Foreign Relations, Spies, Greenwald), Five Came Back: a story of Hollywood and the Second World War by Mark Harris (791.43 HAR), and The Sixth Extinction by Elizabeth Kolbert (Nature Dinosaurs Kolbert).
Fiction works to pick up are The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell (MIT), Us by David Nicholls (NIC), Some Luck by Jane Smiley (SMI) and The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin (ZEV).
Movies and DVDs
Do you check out movies and DVDs? Please handle the disc with clean hands and touch only at the edge. The number of discs that are returned with dirt or food grime indicates that greater care is needed. The more funds that need to be devoted to cleaning and replacement, the less is available for adding new titles.
Appreciate Local
There’s a presentation of original stories that are made available through the efforts of local author wrob. Past attendees have commented how worthwhile this time is, and that they came to appreciate an aspect frequently overlooked by them earlier. The next presentation is Friday, June 19 at 1:30 p.m.
Large Print Browsers
You may have noticed that some ceiling lights over the Large Print collection were not on. This is not because they are turned off. We are currently waiting for the company to replace a defective ballast so that everything works in sync and regret the slightly darker area. In the event you cannot locate a particular title, ask a staff person to locate it for you.
Aware?

Hours
A recorder at 765-8162 gives the hours we are open if you call in when we are closed. Open hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday 9 to 7; and Saturday 9 to 1. We look forward to seeing you.
