Health at the End of a Needle
Acupuncture is a system of diagnosis and treatment that dates back thousands of years. Rather than simply treating presenting symptoms, acupuncture works to balance Qi, or the body’s energy, thus balancing the mind, spirit and body. Instead of breaking a person down into organs and systems, traditional Chinese medicine views a person as a whole, dynamic being, with the innate ability to heal.
By balancing the body’s energy, acupuncture removes possible interference with this innate ability to heal, preventing poor health and sickness.
What should you expect from an acupuncture session? After taking a health history and performing an exam, the acupuncturist will gently tap needles into specific points along energy meridians in the body. These needles are very small, and usually not felt at all, or they may feel like a slight pinch. Only sterile, disposable needles are used. Once the needles are placed you simply lay back and relax. The whole treatment should last about 30 minutes, and most people find it to be a very calming experience. The frequency and duration of treatments depend on the condition being treated.
Every person is unique. Some people respond quickly, in only a few treatments, while some require more visits. Acupuncture is used to treat a wide variety of conditions. Some of the more common reasons include headache, stress relief, smoking cessation, depression, pain, and nausea. It is not necessary to have a condition to receive treatment, however. Since acupuncture balances the body to help prevent dysfunction, everybody can benefit.
