Original Stories
Looking for a special program or something slightly different than what you may be used to? Consider participating in the Local Author presentation on Friday, June 19, at 1:30 p.m. You’ll be assured some smiles and an experience you’ll think about after the fact.
Summer is a good time to expand one’s horizons a bit.
Class
Getting some directions can be a big help. If you’re using the i/Pad or i/Phone sign up for the Apps class on June 18. If you’re the owner of an i/Pad or i/Phone, Apple absolutely overwhelms the competition when it comes to apps. Apple notes that more than a half-million dedicated i/Pad apps have been released worldwide. The right set of apps can transform your device into nearly anything you desire. The downside is a discovery problem. How do you navigate so many apps to find those worth downloading? Classes such as this one help a lot.
Fairy Tales
Fairy tales have a long and distinguished heritage. “Cinderella,” for example, has been found in over seven hundred variants all over the world, dating back to the ninth century in China. Their legacy notes that fairy tales are allied with hope and a utopian spirit. They suggest that change is possible and miraculous transformation is a given.
If you check under fairy tales in our catalog, over 300 titles can be found. As summer is a time to recheck and enjoy activities not necessarily looked at during other parts of the year, it may be time to check out some of these 300+ titles. Researcher Jane Holen makes the point that fairy tales have a healthy, nurturing, cathartic effect. Using archetypes and symbolic language, they externalize conflicts and situations that cannot be spoken of or explained or as yet analyzed.
Returning Materials
We added a sign to encourage materials being put in the materials return by the least wide side of the book or DVD. When books are oversize it’s easier for them to get caught in the sorter and sometimes not be available for the next person or not be checked in when the widest end of the book is laid on the sorter. If the narrow side is laid on the sorter belt, it almost always registers correctly and works perfectly.
eBooks
On our webpage there is a square called “download extra eBooks.” Consider exploring this. This is a database that contains thousands of titles. This database contains nearly 50,000 eBooks and you are not limited by a two week period but can keep them on your e-reader for a longer period. The advantage to the library is you can get comfortable with eBooks, have access to high quality works, can fit them to your reading schedule and are a labor of love because all of the works have been digitized and proofread by dedicated volunteers. If you’re starting with eBooks, remember the class on June 22. Pre-register.
Volunteers
If you can spend four hours a week one day a week in helping out in the bookstore in the Library Commons, please fill out an application available on the first floor or send an email to beachfriends@comcast.net.
The Wider Community
Libraries help remove fear from our culture: fear of the other, fear of the unknown, and fear of the differences of opinion that make us human. Our libraries hold and foster access to countervailing opinions, information about worlds beyond our own, and insight into cultures we have never experienced, as well as awareness of people living right next door.
Materials Budget
In 2008, print books captured 67 percent of the budget on average in public libraries and media (which encompassed audio books, DVDs and music) 18 percent. eBooks were not even counted. This year, print books account for 59 percent of the budget on average and media 24 percent. Also this year, eBooks are 7 prcent of the average budget.
Library Hours
When we are closed, the hours of operation are included in a recording when you call in. Stop by Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.; on Wednesday between 9 and 7; and on Saturday between 9 and 1. We look forward to seeing you.
