Cafe’ Hours
As we transition from the busy season to less congested roads, the Cafe’ in the Library Commons is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Bookstore
Summer is a good time to check out bargains in Beachcombers Bookstore on the third floor as we tend to receive more donations near the end of season and staff & Friends members review more titles for going to the bookstore.
We are also in need of two people to cover one shift during the week from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 to 4. This enables us to keep the bookstore open full-time and gets more titles into readers hands. If you can assist, please complete a bookstore volunteer application at the Staff Assistance Station on the first floor.
Mural Underway
In the coming weeks a mural is being painted in the foyer and wall leading to the first floor. Contractors will be in to create a perfectly flat surface wall so that the artist’s colors will have a bright hue. This wall will go up 12 feet and have a nautical scene that will be enjoyed from the elevator, from the foyer and when using the stairs.
Among the Year’s Bestsellers
These authors each have had three or more books among the year’s 200 bestsellers:
Childrens: Jeff Kinney (of Diary of a Wimpy Kid fame)
Dr. Seuss (in J EZ, JE, and J Bound Books, and check out J813.52 FOR)
Teen: John Green
Adult Fiction: John Dashner, James Patterson and Veronica Roth
Movies and DVDs
When you use and view a movie and/or DVD you’ve checked out, please handle it with clean hands and touch only at the edge. The number of discs that are returned with dirt or food grime indicates that greater care is needed. The more funds that need to be devoted to cleaning and replacement, the less is available for adding new titles.
Print Is Back
Print is back or probably more accurately, never left. Sales of print books sold through outlets that report to Nielsen BookScan (which captures approximately 80 percent of print sales in the U.S.) rose 2.4 percent in 2014. These figures are evidence that print books are selling better than they have since sales of e-books rose dramatically in 2010 and Borders closed its doors in 2011.
The gains for 2014 were led by sales in juvenile nonfiction. After that, it was adult nonfiction, which rose 1.4 percent. Adult fiction was the only major category that had a decline in the year.
Looking at formats, board books had the biggest gain in the year, followed by paperbacks and then hardcovers. Mass market paperbacks had a decline.
Gift Books
It’s interesting to see how much attention publishers are giving to putting out gift books. What makes a book a gift edition? First, aesthetics is given particular attention as one notices in anniversary editions for example. I like the definition given by Rage Kindersperger: “A gift book is a book that you want to look at slowly and set on a table or shelf where you spend a lot of your time, so you can catch a glimpse of the cover.” Second, gift books pay a lot of attention to the tactile elements, like cover embellishments, paper quality, and special touches like foil and ribbons, as well as editorial content.
