Paradise Lost
Estero Island Historic Society sponsors Jack Davis who discusses the natural history of Florida. The presentation is scheduled in the Community Room on Monday, beginning at 7 p.m.
Dr. Davis is Professor of environmental history and sustainable studies at the University of Florida. He is the author or editor of several books on Florida, including the most recent, An Everglades Providence, which won the Gold Medl in nonfiction from the Florida Book Awards.
Upcoming-Mah Jongg
Mah Jongg is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 13, 20 and 27, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Bring your sets and new comers are welcome, aided by instruction from Kathy Pfeil.
Cards are available for purchase at the Staff Assistance Station on the first floor. These are the official cards of the National Mah Jongg League and available in large print for $9. If you are comfortable enough to aid others on one table, Kathy will heartily welcome your assistance.
iPad/iPhone
We find that most classes of instruction fill up quickly. To enable more to participate, we are offering two sets of the beginning and intermediate classes. One is offered by our regular resident instructor, Betsy and one by our snowbird instructor, Robin.
Non Fiction
The Non-Fiction collection has a fresh look. The titles have been divided into subjects and then labels colored that each subject has its own color. Take a walk down in the Non-Fiction section and notice Health, Arts & Crafts, Biography, Education, Graphics, History, Religion, Science, Travel and True Crime. More is to come but these subjects are finished.
Booksale
The Friends of the Library are preparing for their next book sale on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. We have really appreciated several large donations in recent weeks and have put aside many titles for this booksale. We found that over 1,000 titles found a home during the January booksale.
Bookends
If you have a bookend that deserved to be appreciated, consider giving it to the library. We’ll add it to our inventory and then it’ll grace a particular shelf. We have received a growing number of comments from readers who are enjoying the bookends added over the past year.
While a bookend is, of course, an object designed to buttress or support an upright row of books, they are so many styles and materials that have been incorporated into bookends over the centuries, that it’s a treat to see this wide range of art and utility. The variety can be found in the childrens and non-fiction collections.
Cafe’
Enjoy the Cafe’ on the third floor. The manager Tara is a pleasant person, and her treats are sure to enhance eating pleasure. She has recently added smoothies all natural ingredients, no sugar.
The Cafe’ is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Bikers
There is a new, creatively designed bike rack in the third space from the front entrance. There are also parking racks on the corner of the library near the School St. entrance, and racks in the parking garage. Please always park in one of these areas.
Do not damage landscape or walls by being in such a rush that you avoid care for the environment and people.
Library Hours
When we are closed, the hours of operation are included in a recording when you call in. Stop by Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.; on Wednesday between 9 and 7; and on Saturday between 9 and 1. We look forward to seeing you.
