Artist of the Month

Craig Petersen is our Artist Extraordinaire this month. His search for details takes through his native rural Indiana, Ohio and the eastern seacoast. You’ll find many paintings that center on Beach themes and places.

Painting is his life and his passion and one can easily see this by the devotion he brings to his paintings. Besides teaching watercolor classes, he also is a freelance artist for a national greeting card company.

Classes

When a presentation or class in the Community Room says to “Pre-register,” please be sure to make every effort to be in attendance. Limited class size is done for practical and educational reasons. Signing up without a show means someone else who would participate has not signed up. The presenter cannot address individual concerns in some classes when attendance is over 20. It is discourteous to show up for a class when pre-registration has not been done.

We have two or three classes that are in exceptionally heavy demand and that fill up quickly. While we are trying to locate additional instructors that is not always easily or quickly possible. We appreciate your recognition and consideration in not getting angry because registration is full.

iPad/iPhone

While we offer classes each month to assist in becoming more astute users of these devices, the demand is beyond instructor available time. If you’re well versed in these devices, please talk with me about offering a class to assist others in utilizing their iPad/iPhone more beneficially. There are helpful resources available which makes it easier to get organized.

Usage

Use of the library is up dramatically. While we are happy to have more open space to utilize, it still invites proper care and consideration. When participating in a Community Room event, please take in only a drink in an enclosed bottle or cup, and be attentive so no spills happen. Damage done takes staff time, cleaners time, pest control attention and a bit more of the budget. At times more options would be available if consideration for others was an uppermost priority.

Wi-Fi

The Library Commons on the third floor offers Wi-Fi access and enables one to do so in a pleasant environment with a great view of the water. Use of cell phone is welcome there too, as is eating. The Cafe’ is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm. Support the Cafe’ during your visits as it needs regular users and cannot just exist by itself.

If you have a headset, please keep your voice in moderation so that others are not bothered. We find that many times people talk louder on the cell phone than they do in regular conversation without realizing the increase in volume. Those business owners using the computer and phone are advised to limit usage to your immediate space and not to an entire area of the Library Commons. You are not paying for office space but using a service that is available to all who choose or need to use it today.

Is It Cold?

Outside temperature varies a lot on an overcast, rainy or partially sunny or not day. One of the advantages of a highly energy efficient building such as the library is that the air you feel is healthy. It may at times feel cooler though.

An indoor air pollution problem exists when a limited amount of fresh air is circulated throughout the building. Humans exhale carbon dioxide, which in small quantities is not toxic, but may become hazardous if high concentrations are allowed to accumulate.

Air is constantly circulating throughout the library. That is fresh, outside, filtered air. The constant flow of air also reduces micro-organisms or bacteria and fresh air substitutes for the used air. This flow reduces the level of air pollution.

Many of us are used to heated air with little circulation and get used to thinking this is comfortable. Whether it’s healthy may be another discussion. It would make no energy efficiency sense if fresh filtered air would be heated immediately as much of the air would later in the hour or day need to be cooled again. Even if it feels temporarily cooler in a particular area, the temperature level and humidity level are in the set range. If you’re a person that tends to notice slight chills, always bring a sweater.

Hours

A recorder at 765-8162 gives the hours we are open if you call in when we are closed. Open hours are Monday and Wednesday 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9 to 1. We look forward to seeing you.
