Artist of the Month
We are pleased to call attention to the works of Judith Mac Laren. Her paintings grace both the walls of the Library Commons and Friend’s Bookstore on the third floor. She loves the use of colors and one can see it in the variety of colors she manages to bring alive. She has studied with many teachers throughout the USA and England and considers this a blessing in helping her notice dimensions she might otherwise not see. In addition to paintings, she is experienced in doing murals and wall decorations. For the past 20 years her work has added to homes from Massachusetts to Illinois and Florida. Her philosophy is that if you have a blank wall or floor, it is asking to be enhanced!
TV and Reading
Do you notice that TV programs are often broken into eight-minutes so commercial segments can follow? For some children’s programs like Sesame Street, it’s even shorter. The disadvantage of this approach for children, and I’d suggest also for many adults, is that it fosters a short attention span.
Reading, on the other hand, requires and encourages longer attention spans in children (and adults). Well written children’s books seek to hold children’s attention, not interrupt it. Because of the need to hold viewers until the next commercial message, the content of TV shows is often action and more action. Reading also offers action but often fills the considerable space between action scenes with subtle character development.
Surprise Read
Be sure to visit the Surprise Christmas Presents Display on the second floor. Staff have wrapped up some treasures that we’re sure you will love to read. Just pick your package and check it out on your card. But wait until you get home to unwrap it!
Enjoy the unexpected treasure.
Cafe’
The Cafe in the Library Commons on the third floor is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meet friends and share a bite.
Cellphones
Thanks for keeping the library with an atmosphere enabling many to concentrate in a quieter atmosphere. If it’s necessary to take or make a cellphone call, do so in the Library Commons on the third floor or go outside.
Please set the cellphone to silence as you enter the library.
Library Hours
When we are closed, the hours of operation are included in a recording when you call in. Stop by on Monday & Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.; on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 9 and 5; and on Saturday between 9am and 1pm. We look forward to seeing you.
