Activity Details
The Night Before Christmas is a holiday program sure to add to one’s preparation for the season. Soloist Alice Glawe is sure to make this holiday classic come alive with explanation of the song’s background, a solo of the song, and a humorous monologue of a mother and children getting ready for Christmas services.
The Afternoon Movie features “Hitler’s Children” 83 minutes, German, English, Hebrew with English subtitles.
Upcoming Events
Basic Computers is perfect for those who need assistance in being more comfortable with some of the computer features. There’s also a Q & A to enable specifics as needed. Pre-register for the Dec 27 at 10:30 a.m. class.
The Afternoon Movie on Dec. 30 shows “La Sirga” 90 minutes, Spanish with English subtitles.
Display
On the second floor there’s a display case viewable from all angles and this month’s offering features an amazing array of needlepoint. Those who have tried needlepoint at some point appreciate the degree of detail that goes into this craft.
The works on display come through the kindness of Marie Dinon. Most needlepoint designs completely cover the canvas and the ones available for viewing fit that parameter perfectly. One can quickly note too that the detail affirms the high thread count of the underlying mesh fabric, and almost half of those on display have been worked on fine canvas.
Because it is stitched on a fabric that is an open grid, needlepoint is not embellishing a fabric, as might be said for most other types of embroidery, but is literally the making of a new fabric. Do enjoy the fabrics on display-one theme revolves around the use of alphabet letters, another sea-related settings, and a third a variety of uses for the home.
Bikers
If you’re coming to the library via the bike, please use the bike rack on the corner of the library near School St. or park in the rack in the parking garage. Do not clutter the front entrance area or damage landscaping or signage. Thanks for your courtesy.
Jewelry Making
This session has been in demand and we are delighted that jewelry making is once again available. Barbara Ellis, on Jan. 3, will offer hands-on directions so each participant can create a beaded leather flower power petal cuff. Pre-register and $10 materials fee. Check poster for examples.
Drink/Cellphone
A bottle of water in an enclosed bottle is OK in the Library Proper (floor 1 and 2). Please don’t bring anything else in terms of soda or drinks. Spills happen, however careful, and the stain and extra work adds an unwelcome task that is unnecessary and means extra cleaning costs instead of adding to the collection.
Use cellphones in the Library Commons on the third floor. Please silence your cellphone in the library proper on the first and second floors.
Gentle Fiction
The trademark of Gentle Fiction is a transforming message shared through a well-told story, a story that is without four letter words and gratuitous violence or sex. It seems that more readers are being drawn to this genre. There’s also wide diversity in the genre: one can find overtly faith-filled stories and stories that are authentic and hope-filled with complex characters and exciting historical settings.
For the growing male Gentle Fiction readership, publishers are offering notable debuts.
According to a Library Journal survey of 225 libraries conducted in September 2013, two of the top four circulating Gentle Fiction novelists are leading writers in the Amish genre. Yet Amish fiction is changing to meet readers’ shifting interests. What was once a rather insular look at a certain type of Amish family now includes mystery, Amish meets the Wild West and suspense.
Our collection is building. We have added 51 new titles to the Gentle Fiction collection over the past year and now have 939 titles available. Over one third of the collection is actively moving with 893 items checked out over the past twelve months.
Christmas
The library is closed Christmas Day and open Christmas Eve from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Volunteer
Thank you to the donors who provided items for the Gallery on the third floor for the very inviting holiday display. Also thanks for the donors who enabled us to pick up the needed pieces needed to bring the display together. I’m always deeply impressed and moved with these secret Santas encouraging us to do a bit more. It seems to bring out the very best of the season too as they are not in it for the glory or even the tax write-off.

A recorder gives the summertime hours we are open if you call in at 765-8162 when we are closed. Open hours are Monday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9 to 5; and Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
