Activity Details
Jewelry Making class features Barbara Ellis offering hands-on directions enabling each participant to create a piece of wearable jewelry. Barbara also has a display of many pieces of jewelry to indicate both the quality of her work and designs and the variety. Note photos on poster on bulletin board in Library Commons for ideas of what may be created in the class.
Fitness is Fun on Nov. 19 will bring Jack Barone, certified Yoga & Pilates instructor, to share insights about yoga, pilates, general health and nutrition. This is a good opportunity to discuss concerns before signing up for series of classes focusing on flexibility, weight loss, health, etc.
Volunteers
We need two volunteers to assist in returning materials to the shelves and misc tasks. If you can help out, even if only for two months, fill out a volunteer application and talk with Angie.
Saturday, Nov 16
This Saturday will offer the chance to bring a plant you’d like to exchange for another or trade seeds left from a planting. Also browse tables of used books at minimal prices. Exchange and book tables set up in Parking Garage of the library from 9 a.m. to Noon.
Event is sponsored by Estero Island Garden Club and The Friends of the Fort Myers Beach Library.
Books Bring out a Community Response
We are excited about the responses we are receiving from participants in our reading program with a twist, “Human Resilience: A Community Story.” Every week, we meet with more people who share their reactions to books they have read, along with their own personal stories of resilience, during short audio or video interviews at the library. These informal interviews are more like conversations than anything else, and they are fun for everyone involved.
On Monday, Dec. 9, at 3:30 p.m., the library will host a viewing party to show all of the stories we have received through Nov. 25. We will also view the stories created by kids who have participated in the children’s version of the program, Kids of Courage. Even if you have not participated in the program yet, we invite you to attend the viewing party to see the stories that others have shared and to learn more about the program and how to participate.
Participate in an interview by Nov. 25 to be eligible for the grand prize of a Kindle Fire HD and other smaller prizes. To get started, choose a book to read from the program’s reading list-this list is available on the library’s web site and at displays in the library. These books have been selected because their characters exhibit resilience in tough times. When finished reading, share your reaction to the book in a short video or audio interview (your choice) at the library. We look forward to hearing from you!
Artist of the Month
Seeing things differently is what Joel Loeper, artist of the month, prides himself about. After serving in the US Navy he pursued a fine arts degree. No matter what he is doing or where he is, he’s painting on the side. This constant involvement in the arts has contributed to having a large portfolio.
He attributes much of his talent and inspiration to his mother, Elsie Warner. She painted wildlife and landscapes in extraordinary detail, and this has given him a heart, Joel relates, inspired by wildlife and nature. He chooses to use his work to inspire concern and respect for the wildlife creatures he emulates. His kayaking up rivers and streams in south Florida and snorkeling in the waters brings him into contact with all types of wildlife along the way.
Clean Up
We use a green approach to pest control seeking to partner with the environment so that pesticides do not harm library users, volunteers, staff and the environment. We encourage all to exercise these commonsense practices:
(1) Please drink only water in an enclosed bottle on the first and second floors of the library. No eating anywhere on these floors. If you wish or need to eat or drink, please use the Library Commons on the third floor.
(2) We ask homeless and those passing through for a few days not to use the restrooms for bathing or shaving or personal care. The library is not a hotel or motel and for homeless, Chapel By The Sea’s program offers opportunities for cleaning up and good hygiene.
(3) Recognize that the humidity and climate in Florida does invite an occasional ant or spider and a periodic sign of such need not cause alarm. Both cleaning and pest control occurs on a regular basis so being realistic about public usage is a big plus.
Library Hours
When you call 765-8162 or 765-8163 during closed hours, a message gives the open hours. Open hours are Monday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9 to 1.
