Activity Details
Simple origami designs will be shared and mastered in a few minutes in the session on Monday, Sept .9. This is a perfect opportunity to energize the mind and have fun with simple folds. Pre-register.
Movie
Upcoming is Afternoon Movie at the Library. The series features new, award-winning independent and foreign films. Showing on Sept .11 (at 1:30 p.m) is Broken, a film by Rufus Norris. It is 91 minutes in English.
Families & Libraries
84 percent of those parents who say they value a library see that libraries help foster their children’s love of reading and books (Pew Internet & American life Project, 2012). We find this in practice too here. It’s exciting to hear about children who look forward to their “library time” on visits to the Beach Library.
New Program Begins Soon
The library’s exciting new program, “Human Resilience: A Community Story,” will begin on Sept.16. This reading program with a unique twist will give people of all ages a chance to read books centered on the theme of human resilience. After reading a book, participants will share their own stories of resilience in short video or audio interviews at the library. These “digital stories” will be combined into a community story and is made into a movie presentation at the end of the program that celebrates the resilience of our community. Kids will also have fun as they create their own computer animated movies based on the books they read. More details will become available the week of September 9th on our web site and at displays in the library.
Libraries as Lifelines
No matter what kind of economic woes the country may be experiencing, libraries still have a stronghold in the community. That’s the big takeway conclusion in “The State of America’s Libraries” 2013 report recently released from the American Library Association. The report explains “Libraries offer a lifeline to people trying to adapt to challenging economic circumstances by providing technology training and online resources for employment, access to government resources, continuing education, retooling for new careers, and starting a small business.” We find examples of this reality each week. Few people are going to stand on the street and advertise their woes or challenges but it is a reality that many seek assistance. Staff experience firsthand many of these which we respond to quietly and with a sense of knowing that many need the services.
Saying Goodbye
The writings of authors Stephen Covey (non-fiction) and Andrew Greeley (fiction-mystery and some non-fiction) have been a regular staple throughout recent decades. We said goodbye to both men in their deaths this summer.
Stephen Covey, management guru, leaves many helpful titles, among them “7 Habits of Highly Effective Families” (646.78 COV), “The 8th Habit: from effectiveness to greatness” (158 COV) and “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” (158 COV).
Andrew Greeley, mystery writer and Catholic priest, leaves so many titles it’s hard to summarize. Instead look under M GRE.
Library Card
If you haven’t got a library card yet, now is a good time. Such was the advice one of our residents imparted as he got his first card after living on the Beach for 11 years. September is library card sign-up month, so stop at the Staff workstation on the first or second floor and present your FL drivers license. A library card is a ticket to a world of enrichment and opportunity.
Hours
When we are closed a recorder gives the hours we are open. When open, we answer the phone in person. Hours are Monday and Wednesday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.,; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9 to 1. All gates close when the library closes. We look forward to seeing you.
