Sand & Bloom
The Sand & Bloom Gallery on the third floor features miniature sand sculptors created by master sculptor Katie Corning. These darling creatures are on exhibit amid a flowering of potted blooming plants. The color and sand invite delight. Thanks to all residents who shared plants for the exhibit.
Artist of the Month
This month’s Artist of the Month includes paintings on display in the Library Commons on the Third Floor, created by Dr. H. P. Dansby. The paintings include a range of landscapes, abstracts, florals, Florida and people.
There are shades and gradations in most of the paintings. The shapes engage the eye and at times enable the viewer to focus on the here and yet be drawn to there. Notice how a color in a right corner screams for a reciprocity elsewhere, and how the colors can be both cool and warm. There is much to discover in this array of 31 paintings.
At times H.P. seems to offer fragments and layers that draw one into the multiplicity of life. How do our lives splinter off into factions, creating a complexity to daily living that leaves one feeling like there are not enough hours in the day? Let yourself get lost in the paintings to set things aside and let them wait.
Storytelling
On Tuesday, June 25, at 10:30am, the library will have a class on digital storytelling. Digital stories are short three to five minute videos or narrated slideshows in which you tell your own real-life stories to share over the web. In this hands-on workshop, the group will use a digital video camera and Windows Movie Maker to create a short digital story. Participants will gain practical skills and also learn how to best tell their stories. The class will continue through the summer leading up to a special digital storytelling program for all ages that the library will offer. Even if you are just curious, come and see what digital storytelling is all about!
Knitting & Needlecraft
Knitters and needlecrafters are encouraged to attend the Knitting & Needlecraft group that meets the first and third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. Summer time means there will be a smaller group and is the ideal time to start. It’s a time to share camaraderie and current projects and just enjoy knitting and needlecraft.
Shelvers
We are still in need of two volunteers to assist one time a week in returning items to the shelves. The need is particularly for the next five months so if you’re looking for a short-term volunteer activity, this may fit the bill.
Mobile Access
We have completed a mobile version of our web site for smart phones that offers quick access to the latest news, scheduled events, and other library information. If you contact our web site at www.fmb.lib.fl.us from your smart phone, you’ll automatically get the mobile site. This is a less graphical version of our site which loads quicker and displays better on phones.
Display
Continue to enjoy on the second floor, in the low case to the left of the elevator, a display on vintage and antique wood planes. Nearby are two others displays: one in the table tall case on follibles as created by the author of Steeped, and in the tall floor case, are glass fused creations. Each of the displays offers a lot to appreciate.
Waugh
Evelyn Waugh was an English writer of novels, biographies and travel books. He was also a prolific journalist and reviewer. Arthur Evelyn St. John Waugh is widely regarded as a master of style and many times is regarded as one of the great prose stylists of the 20th century. A few months ago, Little, Brown publishers noted it would reissue the 15 fiction works of Evelyn Waugh. That comes as no surprise as these works continue to engage readers. We have “The Complete Stories of Evelyn Waugh” (F WAU) ready for your reading.
