A reception this Wednesday in the Community Room gives you a chance to see the works and approach of fused artist Judy Seeger first hand. Enjoy a snack and look at some of the works close-up. There is also a display on the second floor of a wide range of her works.
Health
Re-watching a favorite TV show taps into the relationship we form with the characters in favorite shows. Jaye Derrick of the State University of NY in Buffalo found that watching a rerun of a favorite TV show may restore the drive to get things done particularly when reserves of willpower or self-control seem to be used up.
The ‘I Love Lucy’ reruns fit into this category. We likely know already what Lucy is going to say or do. All one has to do is sit back and enjoy it. We have the complete series in our DVD collection (ILO).
Upcoming Events
The Secret Power of Journaling will bring Anna Withrow on Friday, July 12 to offer guidance in creating personal narratives. How can one present “true stories” that are both appealing and inviting?
If you want to understand e-books better, get more comfortable using your e-reader, or learn some of the ins and outs, consider coming to the “Getting Started with eBooks” class on Monday, July 15. Bring your e-reader to the session.
Enjoy local talent and the way local artists can capture our scene? Participate in a performance and reading by wrob. As an earlier Beach resident who has returned again wrob will share short pieces of original literature. He uses an interesting approach in that you can indicate which pieces he should try.
Healthy eating is something we want to do and sometimes do. A session on this subject on Wednesday, July 17 will explore topics relating to eating healthy and using food to maintain health. By the end of this session, you’ll have a good idea of what is available in the collection to assist your current and future efforts.
What We Know
Reference was busy last month. Reference questions, which are answers or information provided to an inquiry which requires at least the use of two resources to answer or confirm, were up 2 percent from the same period last year. That’s not much difference but when it comes to instructional questions (e.g. how do you spell attendance? where is Lakes Park? where can I find x?) the number of questions was up 64 percent. Those of us who work in libraries find as much coming our way as ever.
4th of July
We celebrate our national day of independence on the 4th. I find it fascinating the interesting connections that can be made (e.g. did you know that both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers of the Declaration of Independence to serve as President of our union, died on the same day, July 4, 1826, which was the 40th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence?)
Hours
July begins our summer schedule of hours. Although usage of the library is up dramatically in the past year and continues at that pace, we find that most people coming to the library are utilizing resources 9 to 5. Later hours often have few people present and it uses staff time and resources to keep the environment clean, healthy and be cool which is not highly efficient. Therefore, beginning July 1 we will go to a summer schedule open until 6 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday, and until 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Mystery Authors
Readers of mystery fiction said good-bye to Vince Flynn, who died last week after fighting with prostate cancer for the past two years. At age 47 he achieved a lot in writing, not to mention the many other ways he influenced friends and family. His thrillers will be enjoyed for many years. Flynn’s works can be found in M FLY.
Another younger author, David Ebershoff, achieved publishing history. He is the first editor in the publishing world with two Pulitzer Prizes for titles he was responsible for publishing. The fiction Pulitzer we have in our collection: The Orphan Master’s Son (FIC JOH). Ebershoff has also had success with his own writing, particularly with growing demand for The 19th Wife which can be found in M EBE.
New?
From the man behind the Slice-O-Matic food slicer or the Pocket Hose an expandable garden hose comes a new product: physical books. Ajit “AJ” Khubani, who founded TeleBrands Corp 30 years ago, made copies of “Who Knew? 10,001 Easy Solutions to Everyday Problems” available in bookstores. We have it in our nonfiction collection at 640 LUB.
Hours
When we are closed a recorder gives the hours we are open. When open, we answer the phone in person. Hours are Monday & Wednesday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5, and Saturday 9 to 1. All gates close when the library closes.
