Show to Enjoy
Steeped, scheduled the evening of March 13, promises to be a delightful evening of laughter and culinary delights. It’s the debut of a book with the same title by local writer and artisan, Laurie Nienhaus. The performance lends a special rendering and with so much energy to be expended, it’s worthwhile to take the time to attend.
Computer Classes
Those still seeking to have specific issues regarding computers addressed would be wise to consider signing up for the Computer Q & A on March 14. Pre-register and include the question you’d like to see addressed. This enables the presenter to be better prepared to deal with that issue.
Need to feel more comfortable with Windows 8? A demo and session on that subject with time for questions is the format. Pre-register.
Turtles/Local History
Want to learn more about turtles? Then come to the presentation on March 18.
Enjoy local history? Come to “A Time Gone By” on March 18 that offers a visual presentation with stories of the by-gone era and how barrier islands and favorite Lee County parks/preserves got their names.
Healing
Healing Your Aches and Pains on March 19 shares simple strategies and techniques to relieve and manage muscular-skeletal pain. See poster for more details.
Healing of the environment is an interesting approach in the Plants and Culture presentation on March 20. This exploration looks at the intimate relationship between people and plants. Pre-register.
Spanish
Consider becoming more comfortable with the basics of Spanish by spending time with a native speaker. Pre-register for March 18 and 25.
Grand Opening
The Grand Opening of the completed library will be Friday, March 22 and Saturday March 23.
On March 22, “Taste of the Library” will offer samples of cafe’ fare from 3 to 5 p.m. There will also be piano music in the Library Commons and Tours will be available. The day’s festivities on March 23 begin with the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. including Welcome, Dedication, Flag Hoisting with bugle and Honor Guard, and singing of “America the Beautiful.” Activities are scheduled throughout the day on various floors after the ceremony.
Meeting Place, Teaching Center
One of our more central Florida counties, Hillsborough, is renovating three libraries and building two more as the facilities adapt to become high-tech meeting centers. A librarian described the situation well and one we also incorporated when we built the current project now almost completed: “When information was scarce, we were the center for information. Now, information has exploded, and we’ve become a center of culture. I think it’s important that people have that sense of being part of a culture.” If anything, the information explosion has made the libraries more relevant.
It remains equally important to say that traditional library services will continue to be in high demand. Hillsborough County has noted that even with the growing availability of online services and e-book circulation, more printed books, CDs and DVDs are checked out each year. Amazon in some publicity made the announcement that they sold more e-books than print books. I wonder how much hype is involved in that to promote a point or increase revenue. However, Hillsborough’s experience, like our own, is that the printed book is not going away.
Volunteers
If you have a few hours one day a week to share, consider volunteering to assist library staff as a Volunteer for the many tasks that need to be done. We need and rely on volunteers and many hands make the workload lighter. Start the process by completing a Volunteer Application. There are specific applications depending on the direction you’d like to go.

A recorder gives the hours we are open if you call in at 765-8162 when we are closed. Open hours are Monday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
