Construction Update
We are closed this week Tuesday, Jan. 8 to Saturday, Jan. 12. Staff members are moving into the completed library during these days, and subcontractors are finishing the last details. We are excited to see the end and also recognize that though the end is near, there remain the little finishing details or seeing that everything is operating as it should. Thank you for your patience as we all settle in.
The Annex will close too as all materials are being moved.
As of Jan. 14, resources can be found in these areas:
n Audio Avenue (DVDs, audio books, music CDs, Playaways, downloadable media) on First Floor
n Kid’s Place (Toddler’s area, Kid’s for K to Gr 6, multi-purpose children’s area) on First Floor; n Preschool Story Hour will meet in the multi-purpose area on the First Floor each week.
n Magazines & newspapers will be in the Living Room (located to the left of the elevator on the Second Floor)
n Large Print will be to the left of the elevator on the Second Floor
n Internet and Computer workstations for reservation will be in the center of the Second Floor (go to right when you step off the elevator)
n Non Fiction and Fiction print titles can be found to the right of the elevator on the Second Floor
n Wi-Fi, the Friend’s of the Library bookstore, the Community Room and the Cafe’ can be found on the Third Floor.
All materials to be returned will be placed in the Materials Return in the tower lobby as you enter the library and before going into the Elevator or using the stairs. If returning outside library hours you can use the Exterior Materials Return which is entered from Bay Road (you can drop off from car window or bike if desired).
Upcoming Events
Feng Shui: Clearing Energy for the New Year is scheduled for Jan 14, at 10:30 a.m when Nan Grover shares ideas that aid in freeing positive energy for one’s life.
Also on Jan. 14, at 1:30 p.m., Eddie Foster, ranger with the National Park Service, will provide insights on slavery in the North as well as highlight the Park’s newest monument relating to this subject.
Even further on Jan. 14, but at 6:30 p.m., Robert Macomber, author of naval historical novels will be the keynote speaker for “Widows of the Confederacy,” sponsored by the Estero Island Historic Society.
Carving
The display near the elevator on the Second Floor features creations from the hands and minds of the wood carvers from Indian Creek RV & Mobile Home Park. The works are indeed fascinating. There is much to savor as one looks through the display. Note particularly the paper setting of a flower and next to it the carved end result. There are golf balls carved with welcoming faces and some put in a setting that transforms the simplicity of the materials. There are pieces, carved entirely from one piece of wood, that have multiple creatures or faces.
The carvers meet during season at the Indian Creek RV & Mobile Home Park at 17340 San Carlos on Thursday and Friday from 9am to noon, and during non-season on Thursday at the same time. Pick up a handout with additional details at the display.
An upcoming event is a demo with multiple carvers working during the presentation on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 10:30 a.m.
Artist of the Month
We are pleased to highlights the creations of Victoria Nichols this January in the Library Commons on the Third Floor. She has been a Florida resident since 2000, is self-taught and works primarily in acrylic, though she enjoys mixed media too. She had a life changing experience in 2011, and the epiphany from that experience led to a new passion for art and the excitement each new day can bring.
You’ll notice bright colors in her work whether in a smaller format or in a large hanging. She is working on several Florida settings at the present time but considers the works not yet complete. Though friends urged her to display these latest works, she is particular in wanting to display the complete message/feeling/colors. This latter is a credit to Victoria as it also shows the wonderful journey she’s on when she paints. It’s a delight having these works to add excitement to the days here.
Maintenance
If you’re available and able to volunteer to assist in maintenance one or two hours one day each week, please see me for details.
Quilting
Coming soon: a quilting circle for those who would like to share their love of quilting, machine or hand, will be starting Jan. 23. Meeting the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, the group is for beginners to advanced. Those who have thought about trying quilting are also invited. Besides sharing quilting discoveries, the socializing is a big part too.

Tide Clock
We have a tide clock on the outside of the library for a tide clock carries out the function of indicating high or low tide.
The tide is a periodic motion of large masses of water (oceans, seas, lakes) that rise (high tide) and fall (low tide) due to the gravitational attraction felt by the moon-sun system on the earth and the centrifugal force due to the rotation of the earth.
Amplitude, frequency and the time of tides are linked to the gravitational attraction and the centrifugal force and depend upon the surface of water mass, shape of the coast and difference in depths. Now, a natural question would be, who in the world determines such not so easy to measure factors? A variety of Tide Tables are available from the Port Authority. In addition, there are meteorological aspects such as wind intensity and direction and degrees of atmospheric pressure.
Hours
A recorder gives the hours we are open if you call in when we are closed. Open hours are Monday to Thursday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9 to 2. Upon grand-opening further hours will be added.
