Also on Jan. 14, but at 1:30 p.m., Eddie Foster, ranger with the National Park Service, will provide insights on slavery in the North as well as highlight the Park’s newest monument relating to this subject.

Even further on Jan 14, but at 6:30 in the evening, Robert Macomber, author of naval historical novels will be the keynote speaker for “Widows of the Confederacy,” sponsored by the Estero Island Historic Society.

Construction End in Sight

We are closed Tuesday, Jan. 8 to Saturday, Jan. 12, as we prepare for moving into the completed renovation. Both the Annex and Expansion will be closed during these days to move books, computers and offices.

Community Room

If you plan to use the Community Room for a presentation, seminar or activity, try to schedule as far in advance as possible. More events are being scheduled so it’s helpful to have an idea of what may be available or if we are able to meet particular scheduling needs. Usually, if done far enough in advance, there are options.

Maintenance

If you’re available and able to volunteer to assist in maintenance one or two hours one day each week, please see me for details.

Quilting

Coming soon: a quilting circle for those who would like to share their love of quilting, machine or hand, will be starting Jan. 23. Meeting the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, the group is for beginners to advanced. Those who have thought about trying quilting are also invited. Besides sharing quilting discoveries, the socializing is a big part too.

Community Room Schedule

Activities for the month of January can be found on the calendar of events on the handout available at the desk on the second floor of the Expansion, or in the Annex, and also available on the calendar on the library website, www.fmb.lib.fl.us

Playaways

About the size of a deck of playing cards and weighing two ounces, a Playaway is a solid-state player produced in high definition audio offering the content of a book. It’s easy to carry and all one needs are earphones. Current selections of Playaways can be found in the Annex. Once construction is completed, we will continue to add titles to this collection each month.

Library As Place

A patron gave me a card with this quote on it-it speaks for itself. “The library should be as they say, a third place-you have home, work or school, and then you come to the library because it is the center and heart of the community.”

We are experiencing growing usage at the Beach Library. We are also pleased with the community response to the library expansion and growth. We will continue to stay tuned and refine the vision making this growth possible.

Magazines

We are adding copies of new magazines to our collection. As you may be aware, there are many changes in these publications, some moving to less or more issues per year, others adding digital to print or in place of print, and still others venturing with a new offering. Many of our magazines are sponsored and made possible through the kindness of individuals and businesses. The Living Room on the second floor of the Expansion is the place to explore and enjoy these treasures. Now that construction is almost completed, we can move to making this area the Living Room intended.

Posted on the bulletin board near the elevator on the second floor are magazines we are seeking sponsors for. Your sponsorship enables us to expand our magazine collection and to make this in-demand resource even more readily available. Thank you for your investment in this regard.

Hours

A recorder gives the hours we are open if you call in when we are closed. Open hours are Monday to Thursday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9 to 2. Upon grand-opening further hours will be added.
