Greeter

One of the special experiences in being in a library is that we meet and interact with so many talented and wonderful people.

We have a need for a volunteer to spend a few hours in the lobby each week greeting users as they come in and leave the library, as well as provide quick directions, if needed, as to where a particular resource is located. Even if no directions are needed, just the welcome and greeting adds to both the greeter’s and user’s day.

Please consider spending a time period in the tower lobby. There’s an application at the Circ desk on the second floor close to the elevator-ask for the one ‘library greeter.’ Upon receiving your application, we’ll try to contact you in a few days to arrange a time. Naturally, you will come to learn more about the library in the process.

I had the pleasure today of being in the lobby for a half hour while parts of Kid’s Place entrance were delivered. And during that time, it truly was a fun time seeing so many interesting people.

Construction

We’re making promising progress in completion of the renovation. At this point, it is likely we will have the major components completed by the end of December. We will be closed Saturday, Dec. 29, to enable the firewall to be taken down that Saturday and Sunday. There is lots of noise associated with that demolition and we want to avoid such a loud occurrence for users. The official move (when staff begin moving) will be Tuesday, Jan. 8 to Saturday, Jan. 12. We will be closed during these days. The public opening, assuming the Certificate of Occupancy goes without a hitch, is Jan. 14. This date is not the Grand Opening, just our soft opening to finish the settling in changes/process.

What to Expect?

Many have commented about the evidence of careful planning and long- term view and beauty in the expansion and grounds to date. We appreciate that as we have worked hard and long. I cannot tell you how happy I am that a state of the art facility adds to our community, that services will be enhanced and expanded in coming months and years, and that it’s all paid for. That does not happen without a lot of community support, a devoted Board of Directors, volunteers who are regularly involved, and supporters who are willing to go the extra mile.

If you have yet to become a member of The Friends of the Beach Library, consider picking up an application. If you’d like an application emailed your way, contact the Membership Chair, Warren at beachfriends@comcast.net and one will be sent your way. The Friends, a separate tax-exempt organization, seeks to contribute to the library’s services through volunteerism and financial support. Now that construction is almost completed, it will be more possible to use and appreciate the services that will benefit many in the community.

Maintenance

If you have an hour or two and can assist each week in doing maintenance tasks, please see me. This enables us to keep the building clean and often enables those little tasks that remain undone to be completed.

Returning Materials

For now, if coming into the Expansion, bring materials to the desk on the second floor; if coming into the Annex, then into the Annex, and if after hours, then into the book drop next to the Annex.

Once construction is completed, all materials brought into the lobby will be returned to the Materials Return in the lobby; and if dropping titles off after hours or wanting to return them from your car, there will be an exterior Materials Return on the back of the library on Bay Rd.

Local Culinary

The Friends have published a cookbook filled with local culinary treasures. As holiday season welcomes unique gifts, consider this. It’s available in the Friend’s Bookstore or at the Circ desk on the Second Floor or Annex.

Library Hours

When we are closed, the hours of operation are included in a recording when you call in. Stop by on Monday to Thursday between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.; on Friday between 9 and 5; and on Saturday between 9 and 2. We look forward to seeing you.
