Weekly Activities

Preschool Story Hour at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19 meets in new Community Room, Library Commons

Going Further with Your IPad on Thursday, September 20 at 10:30 a.m. Please pre-register.

Go To

The Annex (former Friends Bookstore) if seeking to browse and check out fiction, mystery and non-fiction titles and DVDs. The Expansion if seeking Internet workstations, Large Print titles, music CDs, reference, magazines and newspapers, and Classics. The Library Commons on the top floor of the Expansion if visiting the Friends of the Library Bookstore, participating in Community Room events or needing Wi-Fi access.

Mats

There are two large mats outside the front tower entrance. Both are intended to reduce the amount of sand and debris that comes into the library from foot traffic. Getting into the habit of wiping your shoes, sandals and footwear on these mats will reduce the amount of sand that is dragged into the building.

Volunteers

Seeking two volunteers to each spend one hour a week in helping our landscape stay in pristine condition. Miscellaneous tasks include pulling weeds and periodic pruning. Please see me if you are available for one hour each week.

Call for a musician to play music for 45 minutes during our celebration of moving into the expansion. If you’re available on Oct. 6, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. please discuss possibilities with me.

Photos

If you have photos from earlier decades that deserve a wider audience, consider donating them to the Library Archives. We are working on plans to display a variety of photos as the Beach went through various stages of development from the 1920s to more recent.

Calendar

Posted on the library website is a calendar that lists upcoming events and activities. See www.fmb.lib.fl.us

Renovation

Contractors are making headway with code updates and hurricane improvements of the original library building. The former area used for parking is now surrounded with construction fencing. It has been encouraging to see the pace of improvements with the fireproof membrane put into place in the ceiling of the second floor this past week. Courtyards also are getting more final exterior touches. When visiting the Annex, park at Seagrape Plaza. When returning materials, use the materials drop next to the Annex. When visiting the Expansion, come in the entrance on School Ave.

Florida’s History

On the bottom of the library webpage we have a link called ‘Florida Electronic Library.’ One column highlights ‘Featured Resources.’ Choose ‘Florida History.’ Then a listing of expansive digital collections shows: Florida Memory Project, Florida on Florida, and Florida Kids. Choose ‘Florida on Florida’ and one is treated to a vast digital collection of materials related to Florida.

Culinary Treats

Being added to the cookbook collection are three delights:

“The Great American Cookbook” by Clementine Paddleford. She can correctly be called America’s first food journalist. In the 1930s, writing for the ‘New York Herald Tribune’, ‘Gourmet’, and ‘This Week’, she crisscrossed the nation in a propeller plane, which she piloted, to interview home cooks and discover local specialties. This latest work is the culmination of her career. While the 832 pages may seem a bit daunting, one is sure to discover treasures for the palate.

“Comfort Food Fix: feel-good favorite made healthy,” by Ellie Krieger, offers 150 recipes with full nutrition information and inviting full-color photos. Avoiding all the calories and saturated fat and high in nutrition and taste, this will also provide treats to savor again and again.

“The Back in the Day Bakery Cookbook,” by Cheryl and Griffith Day, celebrates the authors’ bakery’s tenth anniversary offering customers’ favorite recipes. Paula Deen calls their Bakery a “must-eat-at” place in Savannah. There is nothing fancy here, just offering incredible recipes that have stood the test of time and more important, taste!

Another advantage is that ingredients are everyday items most people have in their homes.

Hours

When we are closed a recorder gives the hours we are open. When open, we answer the phone in person. Hours for both the Annex and Expansion are Monday to Thursday 9am to 5:30pm, Friday 9 to 5, and Saturday 9 to 2. Further hours will be added when construction is 100% complete.
