Beach Library gets closer to foundation phase

Knitting & Needlecraft group meets Wednesday, 6:30 p.m.

Upcoming Activities
The Knitting & Needlecraft group has become a regular fixture, and participants enjoy the time spent together. If you haven’t yet attended and knit or do needlecraft or want to do either, consider this opportunity. The group is smaller during early fall so it’s a good chance to test your wings. We smiled this week when some came for a session even though it wasn’t the regular meeting time. It’s a sign the group is growing.
Understanding how a computer operates need not necessarily be complicated. The session on Sept 13 is devoted to looking at Microsoft’s operating system-features and general overview will be covered. Pre-register.
Exhibition
If you know an artist or are a painter yourself whose paintings warrant being sharing with a wider community, consider scheduling a time for an exhibition in the Conference Room here at the library. We are delighted with the residents and return visitors who take regular advantage of the treasures here for viewing. Ask for Marsha to discuss the exhibit or if she’s not in, leave a message and she’ll call back.
Construction
Pilings continue to be placed. The pilings are designed and installed, determined by geotechnical studies that include soil borings and lab tests. There’s a lot of preparation that happens before the walls and floors go in that we usually think of as construction. The pilings take into account anticipated settlement and movement, load capacity, groundwater and other considerations.
It’s also a sign we are getting close to the foundation phase.
DVDs
We have many DVDs in our collection, from popular films to classics, from television specials to educational documentaries. These titles may be checked out for a two-week period. Many return their tiles earlier which is a-ok and enables other titles to be checked-out.
A recent comment lamented the lack of more Red-boxes in the community. However if you get yourself on a schedule, it’s easy to enjoy regular showings and this lack won’t be felt. We are open till 8pm on Monday and Wednesday so check-out after classes or work is possible.
What You’re Really Seeing
The results are serious. Web users can be getting information that fits with their Internet profile, as gleaned by how and where one has searched and tracked by an industry that earns a profit by keeping tracking of data, specifically our political leanings and favorite foods.
Read “The Filter Bubble: what the Internet is hiding from you” by Eli Pariser (On Order). He gives multiple examples of what is happening with search engines, and how information is coming to us via the Web. He also notes that libraries continue to be essential in today’s life as libraries recognize that in a democracy we need to provide citizens with the resources to be well informed and don’t have a vested interest in providing that access. “It’s not,” to quote Pariser, “baked into Google to help build citizens. Google would like to help people find information, sure, but its business is providing advertisers with eyeballs and clicks.”

When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9 to 1. We look forward to seeing you.
