Preschool Story Hour starts at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 20.
Knitting & Needlecraft group meets Wednesday, 6:30 p.m.
Dog Day Thursday from 4 to 5 p.m. Pre-register.
Library Board meeting, Tuesday, July 26, 6:30 p.m.
Upcoming
Next week Thursday, July 28, will have a session devoted to social networking. Exploring sites such as Facebook and Twitter, the time will look at popular sites, topics, reasons people join along with ins and outs of participating. Pre-register.
Library closed Friday
The Library will be closed next Friday, July 22. This is to accommodate the transfer of electricity by FPL to the new transformer. The Library will be open for regular Saturday hours the following day.
Parking
If you’ve watched construction activity in recent weeks, you noticed that a lot is going on. One of the big pluses is that we are moving ahead and one of the not so welcome aspects is now and then there is a road that is partially closed either on School St or Bay Rd. Generally, the parking lot accessible on School St. is open so look to see if there’s an opening and park. We do not necessarily control some of the work done so we can’t cover every contingency.
Workers
All workers in the construction project are registered and legal in terms of construction. Assuming that a worker, because of race, is not a local or legal is an assumption best left unmade. Our construction firm Kraft requires all subcontractors to utilize E-Verify to insure all persons working on this project are citizens or have the correct legal documents to work in the United States. Now and then you may hear a few workers speaking Spanish among themselves but remember that many of us are now 4th and 5th generation immigrants well settled in and a pattern most Hispanics will likely also follow in future years.
Flag Week
This year’s Flag Week presidential proclamation began like this “On June 14, 1777, the Second Constitutional Congress adopted a flag with thirteen stripes and thirteen starts to represent out Nation, one star for each of our founding colonies. The stars were set upon a blue field representing a new constellation in the night sky. What was then a fledgling democracy has flourished and expanded, as we constantly strive toward a more perfect union.”
This is the last week for the display near the front entrance devoted to our American flag.
Library Trend
Those not familiar with public libraries sometimes assume that the Internet would lead to the decline of the library, as we know it. To the contrary, many public libraries have experienced significantly increased patron use in recent years.
One reason for this growth is that today’s citizens have heightened expectations and demands for public libraries based on new approaches to learning. While the Internet can provide 24/7 access to information, it can also isolate learners. In contrast, the growing trend among public libraries is to provide a forum for users to collaborate, enjoy fellowship, engage in healthy debate, create and challenge ideas, and experience learning and discovery in a multitude of meaningful ways. These activities are part and parcel of the expansion.

Don’t remember library hours? When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9-1. We look forward to seeing you.
