Activity Details
What’s all involved in social networking? The session on July 28 will look at sites such as Facebook and Twitter and other popular sites, reasons people join and in & outs regarding these sites. Pre-register.
Construction
Give yourself an extra minute or two to be familiar with parking and entrance to the library. There’s a lot of activity happening in construction and one cannot control every aspect as a variety of workers and firms are underway.
Have heard growing comments about liking the new pavers that are being installed. It won’t be long and you’ll be able to park on them too. The entrance to the library will be moved from the front to a temporary entrance on Bay Road. Watch for signs and workman to direct you the first time or so.
Displays
Enjoy the Polish Pottery in the case near the DVDs. These treasures from the collection of Kristin Nenninger will bring delight for the pattern that can be created in this humble substance with attention to detail.
In the case at the top of the stairs are moments from the travels of Jackie and Steve Schwinn. There’s such variety that one can linger at some length and then find on return that a lot was still overlooked. One can only guess the many memories the Schwinn’s have circulated with the gathering of these delights.
The Future
Geoffrey Freeman in “The Library as Place: rethinking roles, rething space” notes that libraries are no longer primarily a location to collect and organize print resources. Libraries have become an integral part of our society’s learning culture.
In our years of planning for construction, we were attune to the fact that tomorrow should inform what we do today. One of the best ways to do this is to maximize flexibility in spaces and infrastructure. The expanded library will have few walls to enable smooth transition as new needs surface.
Understanding the way a library functions is critical to success. In the past, programming for libraries sometimes involved a formula to estimate necessary square footage as stacks grew. Today, such calculations are not as criticial. You’ll notice if you look at the floor plans that functions are noted along with the aim of keeping these floor plans open and spacious with a workflow that compliments the use.
Covey
“The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” (158 COV) and “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families” (647.78 COV) are worth being re-read. Consider also Stephen Covey’s “The Speed of Trust” (174.4 COV) co-authored with Rebecca Merrill. In an era where trust is needed in individual, business and government relationships, this is a welcome guide to nurture these in our lives.
Library Hours
Call for information. When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, which would be mentioned on the recorder, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9-1. We look forward to seeing you.
