Artist of the Month
The Conference Room this month features the paintings of Linda Raphael. She has been painting since 2000 and has experimented with a variety of techniques to learn to paint and also exercise some of her creative inspirations. Notice the use of color, especially blues, in her paintings. See also a variety of other smaller works in the display case near the stairs on the second floor.
The Senior Zone display case centers on handmade greeting cards from Carole Vasterling and Angie Frantz. You’ll notice that cards can fit not only the usual occasions but be created for a host of special events and activities.
Parking
There’s a lot of activity going on construction-wise as you are probably noticing. Please park in the temporary parking area on School Street, entering also from School St. Parking on Bay Road and in front of the library is closed and will remain closed for some time as we prepare for removal of asphalt and the installation of the storm vaults. You’ll see fences and barricades as work crews are working on the grounds.
Pedestrians can use the usual walking bridge. The bike racks are readily available.
Once parked in the temporary parking, use the front entrance. We appreciate your adjustment, and also the comments of excitement that this needed growth is finally taking place.
Shelvers
We are in need of volunteers who can assist us during July, August and September in returning items to the shelves. 5,869 titles were checked out during May so there is plenty to do. The task would be short-term-once a week for the summer. This in essence is substituting for regular shelvers who are gone for a summer trip or activities. If you’re able to make time in your schedule or share time in your schedule, please talk with Angie.
Flag Day
Tuesday, June 14 we celebrate Flag Day. This was the day in 1777 that The Stars and Stripes was officially adopted as the flag of the United States. The idea to commemorate the day is believed to have originated in 1885 when BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in his Fredonia, Wisconsin class to celebrate a “Flag Birthday.” From there the idea gradually spread until President Truman signed a proclamation in 1916 designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.
The Secretary of the Interior, Franklin Lane, gave a Flag Day address in 1914 offering these words which have taken on increased meaning in the past decades: “I am what you make me; nothing more. I swing before your eyes as a bright gleam of color, a symbol of yourself.”
A special display near the front entrance highlights both the history and meaning of our flag.

Don’t remember library hours? When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9-1. We look forward to seeing you.
