June 30 is an opportunity to explore the basics relating to computers. Pre-register for the class at 10:30 a.m.
Construction
Activity continues at a brisk pace. The current grounds may look a bit inaccessible but there’s a clear plan of improvement underway. Currently, contractors are working on installation of an underground storm system that will serve us for decades and also contribute to an improved environment in this part of the island.
Temporary parking remains on the lots. Please turn onto School St. and enter the lots. Parking is available during hours the library is open. We are maintaining our regular hours. Share with neighbors that we are open during construction.
Self-test on parking lot etiquette: (1) Always park between on/between the lines, taking up as many/few spots as possible; (2) Always park close enough to the adjacent car so that the other driver must grease up with Vaseline to squeeze into their car/fix scratches/wait for your return.
Thanks
We appreciate the encouragement we are receiving regarding library construction. While we have been aware of the needs that prompt the construction, it really hits home when so many share their excitement and good will. Thanks for watching our progress and making it happen.
The Future
Do you recall the battle in the 1990s when the Web was going to be run by AOL? It didn’t happen, as many providers became a part of the scene. I hoping we see the same in terms of formats and providers of author works in the coming years. It’s wonderful to have Google, Amazon and Apple but let’s have lots of other distribution systems and other tablets at work. Having many publishers, many booksellers, many libraries, many authors, and many, many readers will benefit our society.
Slaughter
Karin Slaughter is an American crime writer whose first novel “Blindsighted” (M SLA) became an international success and was translated into 30 languages. She has received recognition via the Crime Writers’ Association. Her second novel “Fractured” and third one “Faithless” (both in M SLA) debuted at number one in various European countries.
She is an active supporter of her local DeKalb Public Library in Georgia. “Reading is not solely a pleasurable pursuit” she says, “Reading develops cognitive skills. It trains our minds to think critically and to question what we are told. This is why dictators censor or ban books. As voters and taxpayers, we must demand that our local governments properly prioritize libraries. As citizens, we must invest in our library down the street so that the generations served by that library grow up to be adults who contribute not just to their local communities but also to the world. We need to shift our national view of libraries from luxuries to necessities.”
Library Hours
Call for information. When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, which would be mentioned on the recorder, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9-1. We look forward to seeing you.
