Westerns
Westerns as a genre in literature are defined principally by their physical setting-the American West (usually west of the Mississippi River) and often concentrate on the frontier territories of the 19th century. Extolling the bravery of the American cowboy/lawman hero inspired the imagination of many novels and movies. Television in the 1950s and 1960s also entertained many of us with shows like “Gunsmoke” and “Bonanza.”
It was no surprise that Larry McMurtry’s “Lonesome Dove” (MCM) won the Pulitzer Prize in 1986 and became a Gold globe winning television series (DVD LON). Recently, the Westerns seem to have penetrated video games, particularly for Xbox and Playstation.
We find that Westerns remain popular as evidenced by the fact that over 7,000 titles were checked out in the past year. If you search the catalog, choose the option ‘new items’ and then choose ‘subjects’ that ‘contain’ and type in ‘western’ and you’ll get the related titles that we’ve added for this genre.
There seems to be a lot of life in this subject. Many contemporary writers use the setting of a Western as historical fiction to tackle social issues. Major publishers still maintain extensive Western inventories.
The category covers the classic westerns as found in the works of Wade Everett, Ralph Compton and Max Brand, and has branched into western romances such as “The Bridegroom” (MIL), Angel Creek (HOW), “Anna Finch and the Hired Gun” (GF YBA), “The Jewel of His Heart” (GF BRE) and “Land of Promise (GF FOX).
Construction
Don’t expect to see walls being constructed in the next few weeks when you look for progress in our expansion project. A lot is happening but much is not readily apparent, e.g. utilities will be going underground, a temporary entrance with steps and ramp will be constructed, and orders placed so that reservoirs and cisterns going underground can be put into place to avoid any later digging. It is also more economical to do this preliminary related work in one phase, rather than piecemeal throughout the project.
Library Hours
Library hours? Call for information. When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, which would be mentioned on the recorder, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9-1. We look forward to seeing you.
