Pre-register for the Social Networking class on Jan. 6 as it explores Facebook and other sites. Also the Writing the Stories of Your Life class on Jan 10 as Anna Winthrow guides participants in creating personal narratives in the writing class.
The Hidden Life of Art on Jan. 7 will find Dr. David Jaffin looking closely at the paintings of the Masters concentrating on Christmas and enable you to see some of the hidden messages.
Viktor Frankl’s insightful approach to giving meaning to life is the focus for the discussion on Jan. 11.
Construction
Continuing from last week, I’d like to highlight some features to be found in the expansion.
One of the comments we heard often from users and residents over the years has been that there are too many steps to enter the library, and particularly, that the ramps are too long. One of the benefits in the expansion is that the entry to the library is on ground level with no steps and no ramps. There’s also a spacious elevator that eliminates having to use even the inside stairs.
On the first floor will be Audio Avenue featuring audio books, which are growing in popularity as people are able to listen to books while driving, or engaging in other activities, or maybe even just resting one’s eyes. In addition, there will be DVDs available. Every day Americans borrow 2.1 million DVDs from public libraries in the United States compared to 2.2 million who rent on Netflex. This area will also provide titles in other digital formats, e.g., e-books, downloadable formats, Playaways and formats in the making. There are very few places to get current, free, good books online and it is likely that the public library will remain the biggest one. Those who have moved into e-books probably need to spend a healthy budget each year, if they are avid readers. We are cognizant that much of what is found for use in a library is done via browsing so staff and displays will focus on assisting in browsing and understanding title options.

Don’t remember library hours? When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9 to 1. We look forward to seeing you.
