Activity Details
16th: Local resident, Peg Whipple shares her stories of the depression, the war years, the times of prosperity and peace, the trials and tribulations of growing up with her prim mother and her alcoholic father. Check out her “A Gift of Memory” (FL 921 WHI).
17th: Breathtaking photos by Tom and Linda Hicks form the special holiday show Christmas Memories Past & Present. They will offer pointers on putting your holiday pictures into a memorable DVD slideshow. Photos will be viewed in their original format and then shown how to enhance these photos and create a simple slideshow by using basic editing techniques from ProShow Producer.
21st: Book discussion enjoys “Mudbound” by Hillary Jordan. Jordan’s debut novel won the 2006 Bellweather Prize for books of conscience, social responsibility, and literary merit, and has received further awards in 2008 and 2009. Its characters are compelling.
Computer
“People from all walks of life use library computers to perform routine and life-changing tasks, from emailing friends to finding jobs,” said Michael Crandall, senior lecturer at the University of Washington. “More than three-quarters of those who used the library Internet connections had access at home, work, or elsewhere. Oftentimes, they needed a faster connection, assistance from a librarian, or temporary access in an emergency.”
We get many requests for computer related classes. We find no ambiguity in the need for computer service. Last month, a slower month, we had 1,969 people who spent time using the Internet. We anticipated that usage would gradually taper off but, as is true in many public libraries, we find users finding many and growing uses for the computer in the library. Many find they can become more proficient after getting insights and ideas in classes and exercises.
Contractors
Board members are busy in reviewing the Construction Manager @ Risk approach that four contractors propose to use. Each has been asked to respond to a variety of questions. References relating to previous CM@R projects are being contacted later this month.
Special
A family and children’s holiday special is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 22, at 10:30 a.m. Folk artist Chip Withrow offers a selection of music that fits the season and lends itself to family get-togetherness. Parents, families, and children are invited to enjoy this special in the Conference Room.
Library Hours
Don’t remember library hours? When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9-1. We look forward to seeing you.
