Thanks

We appreciate the many words and gestures of support that you extend to the Beach Library. This is one of the reasons the library is such a special place-because of people who care and community members who strive to give something back to the library, and make the library the integral place that it deserves to be, and which many in the community have worked to make so in the past.

We received a note from a longtime resident that reads “Keep up the good work. The library has always been the heart of our island to so many. Appreciate you and your staff!” accompanied by a $50 check for the Construction Fund.

The library staff stays busy. Hopefully you sense the concentration with which employees carry out the tasks. At times, particularly when several patrons are at a desk, there may be a little wait. Thank you for your patience, and also for the encouragements you share with staff.

Narrative Nonfiction

As season approaches and the nights grow longer, books that teach us something about the history and wonders of our world make for interesting reading.

Among the 382 books added during September to our collection, these two titles provide a range of experiences and moods and with compelling writing make narrative nonfiction rewarding.

“All My Life for Sale” by John Freyer (On Order) He decided he owned too much stuff and ended up selling many items via eBay. The volume includes enough photos to give an idea of what Gen-Xers found appealing. Many found the story entertaining and thought-provoking.

“The Invisible Gorilla: and other ways our intuitions deceive us” (153.74 CHA) explores the many illusions, perceptual and otherwise, that we encounter each day often without really noticing them. There are some interesting points how our brains tend to edit perceptions, misinterpret evidence and jump to conclusions. Most readers will be wiser for having taken the time to be aware of these six everyday illusions.

Library Hours

Don’t remember library hours? When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday 9 to 1. We look forward to seeing you.
