Activity Details
Book Discussion will center on “Grand Avenues” by Scott W. Berg. This biography of Pierre Charles L’Enfant, designer of our nation’s capitol, will bring a dimension to the District that enlightens along with proof how much one person can influence a vision.
Artist of the Month
Paintings are on display in the Conference Room by Joni Hermansen, our artist of the month. Her creations feature bright colors, many scenes from our community, and create a feel that makes one want to explore them further. Joni likes to bring the practical into her views with the ultimate aim of seeing that art becomes a part of one’s everyday environment. She paints on a variety of mediums. Included in her selection are paintings done on tile as well as canvas.
The Friends
If you’re not a member of The Friends of the Beach Library, please pick up an application on the front desk and become a member. The quarterly newsletter will keep you informed of activities and also expand the base for continued support of the library. It’s so easy to think things just happen, but as an evaluation will show, it is those who become informed and involved that really are the ones who enable service.
Display
The second floor display showcases early American history coinciding with both Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. The Estero Island Daughters of the American Revolution have brought together a patriotic feel as well as appreciation for the early decades of our republic.
Coconuts
The Coconutabilia display in the Senior Zone area is courtesy of Russell Carter. His delight in the multiple gifts that coconut provides to us shows in the variety of items from Asia, Africa and the Pacific islands. Let yourself linger as you explore the basket, lamp, bowls, dippers and many utensils that incorporate coconut as the main resource in its creation.
Russell would relate to the quote that goes “There is sweet water inside a tender coconut. Who poured the water inside the coconut? Was it the work of any man? No, Only the Divine can do such a thing.”
Library Usage
The 2010 State of America’s Libraries, which can be quickly assessed at tinyurl.com/State2010, provides compelling evidence that a decade-long trend of increasing library usage is continuing-and even accelerating during today’s environment. The library community continues to enliven a core value embodied in the First Amendment and the corollary access to receive and consider ideas, information, and images. We welcomed 409 people this past Monday.
Library Hours
When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-816, or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 9 to 5; and Saturday 9-1. We look forward to seeing you.
