Libraries In Sync
The latest national data from the Institute of Museum and Library Services show that library visits and circulation climbed nearly 20 percent from 2000 to 2008. Since 2008, technology has continued to drive in-person visits, circulation and usage.
We are proud of our Beach Library. One of the aims of the expansion is to utilize more actively the most recent technological uses that contribute to the lives of residents and the community. We have provided Internet access for many years and lent movies and music for even more years.Public libraries have moved with technology, from vinyl to VHS to DVD just as we have moved on the computer from discs to CDs and memory sticks.
The Internet is bringing more people instead of less into libraries. We are looking forward to having a computer lab where we can provide hands on experience with various computer programs and how to become more adept at using various applications that keep one in stride with what is available. The Library Commons will enable Wi-Fi use and do so in an environment that many will find comforting and inviting. It will not be unusual to be tweeting, texting, and launching smart-phone apps.
Though technology will be somewhat second nature, we will hold onto the values of traditional libraries:having quiet for study and reflection when needed, expanding awareness of resources on particular subjects and topics, and having staff to assist in locating the desired or hoped for titles.
