In appreciation
The Beach Library is what it is because of the dedication and love that so many people have made possible over the years. Today, I spent time with Paul Whorton whose father, Captain Elmo Whorton (1911-2004), was an active shrimper for much of his life and spent twenty plus years living on Fort Myers Beach during his retirement. The children of Captain Elmo are donating a shrimp boat replica circa 1950-1960 that will be on display in the expanded library.
What made the conversation particularly meaningful was Paul’s sharing of stories and how pleased he was to know we continue the proud tradition of investing in our community.
Library as place
This past Monday I spent time observing how the 314 people using the library that day were spending their time. It was a pleasure to see the number of people who spent time reading magazines, or laying out materials on a table and then involved in research or a writing activity. Still others were browsing titles for check-out or spending time on the Internet.
It appears there is a greater need than ever for shared spaces and social interaction. Libraries are transformative places. By our very nature, we offer a “third place” (not home, not work) where you can come to explore, imagine, think, learn, play, and reflect. It is not unusual to see users spending hours at a time upon stopping by. We do notice that wanting to drink and munch accompanies these visits, and are happy a large area with tables and chairs and caf is in the works for the expansion.
Business desk
We have updated Value Line. The Value Line Investment Survey forecasts stock price performance over the next 6 to 12 months, and provides an analysis of approximately 1,700 individual stocks.
Included also, in a separate folder, are Selection & Opinion commentaries. You’ll find it’s updated weekly and includes October as well as issues for this past July, August and September.
Library hours
Don’t remember library hours? When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9-5, and Saturday 9-1. We look forward to seeing you.
