Harper Lee

Nelle Harper Lee, born 1926, is an American author best known for her 1960 Pulitzer Prize winning novel “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Copies can be found in our Classic collection at CL Lee, also available in large print at LP LEE, in audio LEE, and video and DVD. Readings and further commentary on this work are available in “Readings on” at 813.54 REA. and “Scout, Atticus & Boo: a celebration of fifty years of To kill a mockingbird” can be found at 813.54 MUR.

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the novel and one of the most widely read books dealing with race in America, one is drawn to its being renowned for warmth and humor, despite dealing with the serious issues of rape and racial inequality. Though Lee’s only published book, it led to Lee being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and numerous honorary degrees. She has always declined to make a speech.

“To Kill a Mockingbird” is the selection for book discussion on Oct. 19.

Library Atmosphere

We recognize that library space is very important to users. There is also a range of needs that users have, e.g. some seem to want almost absolute quiet while others are comfortable with hearing mild talking now and then in the background.

Some directions we are moving is 1) to separate public access computers from study areas; 2) to have a separate area with fax machine, photocopiers that is not within hearing range of those who are reading in the stacks or designated reflection areas; 3) having less noise emanating from computers by utilizing a thin client system where no fans are on the computers and information is sent to the units from a central station; 4) having an enclosed area for reading magazines, newspapers, etc.; and, 5) an enclosed area for children’s activities and browsing.

Library Hours

Don’t remember library hours? Call for information. When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We look forward to seeing you.
