Kim Miller is Beach library’s artist of the month
Weekly Activity Details
Preschool Story Hour is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 10:30 a.m.
Jewelry Making class also on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.
Artist of the Month
We get to enjoy the handcrafts of local artist, Kim Miller, this month. Her knack for seeing the unusual is quite evident in the pieces available for your review and enjoyment. She uses natural palm fronds and coconuts for her canvas and brings to each work a one-of-a-kind whimsical art.
A veteran of fine art shows and festivals across the USA, she moved here in 1993. She has lived aboard a 52′ sailing yacht, cruising and diving the waters of the Bahamas, the West Indies, Mexico, and Belize for 10 years.
She is inspired by and gets her colorful design ideas from the brilliant marine life in our oceans. She also has a passion for saving coral reefs. Beginning in about a month, she will be painting in Times Square so you’ll have a chance to see some designs created on site.
Display
The second floor display showcases custom jewelry pieces created by Marguerite Ranney. One can find necklaces and combined necklace/earrings/bracelet. The display also coincides nicely with the jewelry class being offered this week.
Advancing
Some weeks do not offer enough hours to get all needed activities finished. In a way, I suppose that’s a good sign, for challenges can bring out the better side. Christopher Reeve said “So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable.”
I am humbled at times by the important ways we are able to assist residents and visitors regarding a wide range of issues in terms of better information, being informed, and discovering the little things that make life important. That humility of course also includes appreciation for the goodness that many bring to their search, and for the kind words and actions shared with staff.
We know that our library construction plans have received a reception in the community that conveys to us again and again, how important the expanded services and space are to so many in our community. We are also aware that in today’s challenging economic climate, that it’s tempting to want to put things on hold.
Thoreau made clear “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”
Suspense
If you’re drawn to creep tales that take you inside twisted minds and keep you tethered there, consider crime novels by Ruth Rendell (who also writes under the name Barbara Vine), Thomas H. Cook and Patricia Highsmith.
Library Hours
When we are closed, a recorder gives the hours of operation, either on 765-8162 or on 765-8163. Except for holidays, we are open Monday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We look forward to seeing you.
